American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges The American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) was founded in 1974. AMATYC works extensively with other national organizations.

AMATYC's vision is to be the leading voice and resource for excellence and inclusion in the first two years of mathematics in colleges and universities. It is a member of the conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS) and the Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP). AMATYC cooperates with the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the National Council of Teachers of Mathemati

cs (NCTM), the American Statistical Association (ASA), the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), the Mathematical Sciences Education Board (MSEB), Mu Alpha Theta (MAT), and other professional organizations. The AMATYC Executive Board met in Memphis, TN April 17-19. We had some very productive discussions on how to keep our members engaged year-round, as well as ways to increase our membership and make the organization more visible to faculty teaching math in the first two years of college nationwide. We look forward to seeing everyone in Philadelphia in November for our annual conference!

Dear AMATYC Colleague --

Recruitment is now underway for this year’s IGNITE Event!

Do you have an exciting idea, philosophy, pedagogy, teaching technique, an amazing proof, a mathematical side-interest, a discipline-related hobby, a secret to great teaching or learning? Did your topic not even exist until this week? Are you nervous or uncertain about presenting a full session but willing to "get your feet wet" for five minutes among friends?

I invite you to the IGNITE Event at the 52nd annual AMATYC Conference – the night of Friday, November 20! Twenty slides are automatically advanced every fifteen seconds giving the speakers exactly five minutes to share their passion! Audience participation is encouraged. We always have a packed room for IGNITE at the conference!

E-mail your topic idea for a talk and a short (1-3 sentences) abstract/description to IGNITE host Eddie Tchertchian ([email protected]) right away. We’re looking for presentations that might entertain and excite a mathematician; motivate a professor to try something new or improve the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Give it a try, won’t you? “Enlighten us, but make it quick!” We look forward to seeing you “on stage” in Philadelphia!

Best,

Eddie Tchertchian
IGNITE Host / AMATYC President
