Imagine traveling across the country to compete alongside some of the nation's top student journalists, all while reporting under tight deadlines.

That was the experience for University of Memphis student Erika Konig, who was named a finalist in the National Audio Championship at the Hearst Journalism Awards Program after her work stood out among 1,353 entries submitted nationwide.

During the weeklong competition in San Francisco, finalists completed a series of journalism assignments judged by media professionals.

"Being selected as a finalist was an amazing privilege," said Konig. "The week was challenging, fun and unforgettable."

Konig's accomplishment came as the University of Memphis Department of Journalism and Strategic Media placed sixth nationally in Broadcast in the Hearst Journalism Awards Program.

Four University of Memphis Computer Science graduates can now add published video game developers to their résumés.

As part of their senior Capstone Project, Oscar Barreto Lara, Meredith Logston, Noah Sandler and Garrett Sueing partnered with local studio Dapper Duck Software to help create The Magical Quest of Molly the Marble, a cozy fantasy puzzle game that was later selected for The MIX Summer Game Showcase during Summer Game Fest in Los Angeles and featured at the GRAMMY Museum's Ray Charles Rooftop Terrace.

"I feel very lucky to have been given the opportunity to work on this game," Sandler said. "It was so cool to see it evolve throughout the semester, and it makes me proud that I was able to help contribute to that."

From the classroom to one of gaming's biggest showcases, these Tigers gained real-world experience while helping bring a Memphis-made game to life.

Molly the Marble is available to wishlist on Steam now, with PlayStation and Xbox storefronts coming later this month.

Nine University of Memphis students kicked off their summer giving back to the community in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. as part of the Alternative Break Experience.

Students volunteered at Habitat for Humanity Walton County's Habitat ReStore Walton County, the Food For Thought Outreach Inc food pantry and the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society.

“This experience gave me a lot of perspective,” said sophomore Ian Twinamasiko. “It’s easy to go through your daily life without fully realizing how many people around you are quietly carrying really hard situations, whether that’s food insecurity, recovering from a natural disaster or just needing encouragement. This trip made all that very real for me. I came back genuinely more grateful and more aware.”

The UofM Center for Service Learning and Volunteerism has over 3,000 volunteers annually with 10 or more service trip opportunities.

This past year, over 1,432 students volunteered over 14,000 plus hours to yield an economic impact of $402,266.71.

The Center for Community Research and Evaluation (CCRE) at the University of Memphis is launching a new research unit dedicated to improving the transparency, accessibility and usability of Shelby County’s criminal justice data.

The CLEAR Initiative (Criminal and Legal Evaluation using Administrative Records) will harmonize data sources from five Shelby County agencies, making it easier to track outcomes as cases progress through the criminal justice system.

“Right now, criminal justice data lives in silos,” said Dr. Jonathan Bennett, director of the CLEAR Initiative and chief data scientist at CCRE.

“We can analyze data from the jail, or from a specific court or from prosecutors, but not how those pieces fit together in a meaningful way. CLEAR will allow reporting and research built on a true 360-degree view of case outcomes.”

The beauty of the University of Memphis campus does not happen by accident.

Behind every green space, flower bed and shaded walkway is a dedicated team working to create an environment where students can study, build friendships and make lasting memories.

Thank you to Trai Flemon and our Landscape Services team for all they do to make our campus shine.
