Growing up in the housing projects of Memphis, Tennessee, Crystal Chatman felt ill-equipped to deal with life’s difficult situations. She wished for a mentor to teach her about the importance of education and self-worth. Having her mother and siblings really helped her face life obstacles that came her way. As an adult, she channeled that desire into action by founding Beautiful Spirited Women (BS

W)in 2009 with several beautiful women who started faithfully with her, a non-profit dedicated to empowering and advocating for girls. Beautiful Spirited Women (BSW) provides young women with a powerful platform to share their personal experiences with sex, drug abuse, domestic violence, low self-esteem, bullying and depression, and equips them with important life skills to advance in schools and workplace situations. Beautiful Spirited Women (BSW) tackles difficult issues such as poverty and teenage pregnancy by bringing young mothers to talk to program participants and working with teenagers who hold dreams of one day owning their own businesses. Since its inception 14 years ago, Beautiful Spirited Women (BSW) has spread to fourteen cities and states, serving 25,000-65,000 constituents each year through events, workshops, seminars, luncheons, virtual platforms, and school visits. With an incredible board, volunteer team, parents, and amazing girls of BSW, we would not be who GOD called us to be without any of them. PEEK-A-BOO! 👀

You see the impact.

But do you see the work?

You see the programs.

You see the pictures.

You see the awards.

You see the smiling faces.

But you don’t see the late nights.

You don’t hear the countless phone calls.

You don’t hear all the times we are told “no.”

You don’t see the struggles.

You don’t see the challenges.

You don’t see the manipulation.

You don’t see the victim-blaming when someone finally speaks up.

You don’t see the defensiveness when accountability enters the room.

You don’t hear what is said behind our backs when we hold people accountable.

You don’t see the unanswered messages.

You don’t see the many trainings required to prepare people to serve with excellence.

You don’t see leaders doing right by people even behind their backs.

You don’t see the internal competition where collaboration should exist.

You don’t see people doing what they want instead of what the mission requires.

You don’t see the constant nitpicking.

You don’t see people asking, “What can I get from y’all?”instead of asking, “What can I contribute to the mission?”

Why I couldn't get this?

Or what I supposed to be doing again.

You don't see the systems in place

You don't see anyone worrying about what the girls need.

You don’t see the leaders holding everything together while silently carrying the weight.

This is what doing the work in the nonprofit sector really looks like.

It is not always glamorous.

It is not always celebrated.

And it is definitely not always easy.

But we continue showing up.

We continue serving.

We continue building.

Because the mission is greater than the obstacles.

And the people we serve are worth every sacrifice.

The public sees the impact but God sees the work.

Girls and women are often taught to smile, stay quiet, avoid conflict, and make everyone else comfortable even when something doesn’t feel right.

But hear me clearly: Being kind does not mean ignoring your boundaries.

You are allowed to say **NO**.
You are allowed to change your mind.
You are allowed to protect your peace.
You are allowed to walk away from friendships, relationships, and situations that make you feel unsafe, disrespected, or drained.

Setting boundaries does not make you mean, difficult, or selfish. It means you value yourself.

Before you go to sleep tonight, ask yourself: What have I been tolerating just to keep someone else comfortable?

Beautiful Spirited Women is preparing for an exciting new chapter, and we are seeking visionary professionals, community leaders and passionate supporters to join the BSW Capital Campaign Team.

Available positions include:

• Capital Campaign Chair
• Capital Campaign Co-Chair
• Board Liaison
• Major Gifts Chair
• Corporate Partnerships Chair
• Grants & Foundations Chair
• Government Relations Chair
• Community Engagement Chair
• Marketing & Media Chair
• Finance & Pledge Chair
• Fundraising Events Chair
• Real Estate & Legal Advisor
• Construction & Development Advisor

Selected members must be willing to serve for 12–18 months, attend monthly meetings, make a personally meaningful contribution, close on business for BSW to potential donors and partners, participate in fundraising efforts and represent our organization with integrity and professionalism.
