I love teaching and mentoring these young men as they prepare for life. They have just about absorbed my 12 week emotional intelligence/conflict resolution program in a little over 8 weeks! I can’t express what it does for my soul to witness these young men becoming slightly different people and them understanding why they had to. I love what I do.

As an introduction, before I start teaching, I always retell the day of November 12th 2001. I make sure that I detail every insecurity and toxic thought I had that pushed me towards doing the worst thing I’ve ever done. The students and I discuss those insecurities and they learn how common they are but also how dangerous they are. Next the kids get an extremely graphic description of each and every uncomfortable/precarious situation I was in and how I almost didn’t make it out of there alive (such as being stabbed). I also detail many other stabbings and killings as a means to de-glamorize the “violence as a solution” message they’re getting from the music and media they injest. After all that, the real lessons (Emotional Intelligence and conflict resolution) begin.
