Honored to screen this night at the opening of the WLOK RADIO in Stax Museum of American Soul Music ! 🙌 thank you for this opportunity 🙏

The WLOK Black Film Festival is celebrating Black History Month 2023 by honoring WLOK Radio on its 46th anniversary!

We will show the film “A Piece of the Action” on Friday, February 17th at the museum, 926 E. McLemore Ave, at 6:30pm. WLOK became the first black owned radio station in Memphis, TN on February 17, 1977. The film “A Piece of the Action” is also from 1977 and has music that would have been played on WLOK at that time. The film is free to the public and there will be free water and popcorn!

THIS PHOTO - Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rabbi Heschel. They walked together in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march.

TODAY we honored the legacy of MLK and the dream of a more just future that he died for.

TODAY was also the Jewish holiday of Tu b’Shevat, a time to plant seeds of hope and optimism for the future.

TOMORROW the Senate begins debate on two bills to protect voting rights. If these two voting rights bills fail, our democracy will suffer and may never recover. Republicans are working every single day to undermine free and fair elections. Nineteen (19) states recently passed Republican-led voter suppression and election subversion laws.

Dr. King believed freedom requires action, so … TOMORROW call your Senators to take action to protect our vote by passing the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act.

We must confront the scourge of racism and white supremacy. Future generations will ask: What did you do when democracy was at stake?

This is the cause of OUR TIME.
