If your hydrangea macrophyllas are displaying buds like this and you want to encourage them to be blue now is the time to apply a soil acidifier.

I was lured by our warm above average temperatures and the budding up of my hydrangea macrophyllas into believing we had left winter behind. However, I and my hydrangeas were so wrong! If you have hostas, hydrangeas or anything plant wise in pots and are able move them put them in your enclosed garage ( yes, move those cars out to make room if needed), up beside a protected sheltered wall or covered area. I seem to collect pots from my previous plant purchases. I’ll take the larger ones and place over my emerging hostas in the ground. My hydrangeas are too large at this point but your’s may be younger. If you place a tarp or cloth over your hydrangeas or shrubs, I understand that where the material touches the green tissue it will kill it. So use staking to hold it above the foliage. We will be battling wind too so it’s important to secure whatever cover you use with weights such as bricks, stone etc. It’s going to be dicey Monday and Tuesday nights.
If you have any techniques you have successfully used please share with us.

Below are photos of my over excited hydrangeas in bud.

We have lift off hydrangea fans! Our hydrangeas are bursting forth with fresh green growth in this new season! This is Endless Summer the original is a macrophylla located in zone 7b/8a Memphis TN. It’s been cleaned up at bit already but more will be clipped as it becomes evident what is really dead. I’m hoping for some blooms. We had some wide temperature swings in this area in December that may make blooms sparse this year. I’m hoping for the best! It’s time to put down a fertilizer when you see green growth. It means the roots are pulling up moisture and nutrients from the soil. An organic like Espoma Hollytone or a non organic balanced one like 14-14-14.

With numerous days in November-December when our midsouth temperatures reached above 65 and into the mid-70’s even our macrophhllas were budding out which is not a comforting thing for those of us wanting those beautiful blue/pink blooms. So now we are facing extreme cold temperatures. 🥶❄️🌨️.

Memphis winters like to keep us guessing. A few simple steps now can make a big difference when temperatures drop.

Before the freeze:
• Water plants well
• Refresh mulch
• Cover tender plants
• Protect containers and new plantings

After it warms up:
Uncover during the day, let ice melt on its own, and hold off on pruning until things settle.
