"Southwest is using grants from the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis and Economic Growth Engine for Memphis and Shelby County to train underemployed and unemployed people in Whitehaven and South Memphis ZIP code 38126 in dialysis technician or medical administrative courses to be job-ready in six months or less. Southwest will add hospitality to courses."

The event's purpose, according to Southwest president Tracy D. Hall, was to talk with elected officials about "what we do and what we need.”

We need 100 volunteers at Booker T. Washington High School - Memphis and LaRose Elementary School - SCS on Friday, Jan. 24, to distribute backpacks to every student filled with school supplies, health & hygiene bags, as well as materials to support teachers. Email [email protected] to sign up!

In Memphis, Comcast also awarded a $30,000 grant to the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis to support digital literacy instruction associated with the group’s Vision 2020 plan to reduce poverty in ZIP code 38126; a $20,000 grant to CodeCrew to support coding job skills for children; and a $10,000 accelerator grant to the Memphis Urban League for digital literacy and internet safety training for seniors.

Comcast came to Memphis on Friday bearing free laptops for students, free internet service for their families and tech grants for local nonprofits.

Fun fact: In 1988, the Women’s Fund was established at the Community Foundation with $50,000 gift from Mertie Buckman. In 1994, the Foundation initiated a series of meetings that led to the formation of the Women's Foundation for a Greater Memphis, created to recognize and encourage philanthropy among women and to better the lives of women and children in our community.
