We inspire compassion and change through healing centered, trauma-informed training and coaching rooted in Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI®). Safe and Secure TN is a program of Empowered to Connect (ETC) in partnership with the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development (KP-ICD) working together to reduce the impact of adverse childhood experiences and trauma in Tennessee. The program o

ffers multi-disciplinary training to caregivers and professionals supporting children who have experienced adversity, trauma, and loss. Safe & Secure TN utilizes the research-based and empirically validated intervention, Trust-Based Relational Intervention or TBRI®, to provide both online and in-person training. Safe & Secure TN collaborates with local, regional, and state community-based organizations, child welfare agencies, and houses of worship to build capacity for implementing attachment-based, trauma-informed healing care within and across systems. As organizational and systemic capacity grows, Safe & Secure TN facilitates collaboration between and across systems to develop connected communities of support.

"Trauma-informed leadership is not just a compassionate choice; it's a
strategic imperative for organizational success.” – Ryan S. Gallik

Leaders who understand the impact of stress, adversity, and burnout are better equipped to build healthy workplace cultures rooted in trust, connection, and clear communication. Trauma-informed organizations often experience stronger teamwork, increased employee engagement, improved retention, and healthier responses to conflict and change.

Trauma-informed leadership recognizes that supporting human well-being is directly connected to long-term organizational effectiveness.

Relational leaders start with connection before correction. Prioritize people feeling seen, valued and heard.

How can meetings bring more connection? How can reviews help staff feel valued and not just corrected? How can the strength of your staff and coworkers being celebrated?

Creating an atmosphere where you don't just hear about corrective feedback is vital in growing a healthy and relational workplace culture.

“Permission slip to celebrate progress, not just performance.”

Giving ourselves and others permission to celebrate progress instead of only performance helps create healthier, more sustainable work environments.

Success is not always found in perfection, constant productivity, or flawless outcomes. Sometimes progress looks like improved teamwork, better communication, learning a new skill, or navigating challenges well. Celebrate growth in yourself and your team. Say it out loud. Recognize it in meetings.

When workplaces recognize effort, growth, and small wins along the way, employees are more likely to feel valued and supported. Focusing only on performance can lead to burnout and fear of failure, while celebrating progress encourages learning, connection, innovation, and long-term growth.

What’s a way that you’ve seen leaders celebrate progress well?

“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” - Theodore Roosevelt

Leadership, parenting and helping others all begins with connection. People are more likely to listen and engage when they safe and valued first.

People will remember how they felt around you much more than what you said.

How do you feel seen and valued at work or home?

It's okay to take a deep breath.

Breathing won’t erase every challenge, but it can create enough space to respond instead of react.

You are allowed to slow down.
You are allowed to rest.
You are allowed to breathe.

Mental Health Awareness Month reminder:
Remember that boundaries are not selfish. “No” is a complete sentence. Creating space or limiting what overwhelms you, helps your mind and body feel relaxed and safe.

"In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity." -Albert Einstein

This is a reminder that hard seasons can still hold growth, clarity and resilience. Challenges often force us to slow down and rethink what matters. While pain and struggle are never easy, they can shape compassion, wisdom and perseverance.

It’s okay if you can’t see the opportunity right away. Sometimes survival comes first. But even in uncertain seasons, growth can quietly take root beneath the surface.

It’s okay to ask for help.

Asking for help doesn’t mean you’re weak or incapable. It means you’re human. No one is meant to carry every burden alone. Whether you’re overwhelmed or tired, reaching out is a sign of self-awareness and courage.

Sometimes help looks like calling a friend. Sometimes it’s asking a coworker for support, telling a therapist the truth or accepting a meal. Healing and growth often happen in safe connection with others, not in isolation.

You don’t have to wait until things completely fall apart before you deserve support. Your needs are valid even when they’re quiet. Asking for help is not giving up. Asking for help is choosing to keep going with support beside you.

What does asking for help look like for you? How has someone asked you for help?

Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder:

You don’t have to carry everything alone. Lean in to your safe and supportive connections, whether it’s a friend, therapist, or family. Relationships can help your nervous system heal. Reaching out to a safe person means everything. They don’t always know when you need help.

"Being able to feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health.” - Bessel van Der Kolk

Healing does not happen only in isolation. Healing also happens in relationships where people feel seen and emotionally safe. Feeling safe is something rebuilt slowly through consistency, trust and connection. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer another person is not advice but our presence.
