History of the Memphis Grand Carousel
1909 – The carousel was built by William Dentzel and installed at Forest Park in Chicago, IL.
1920 – Forest Park was destroyed by fire and the carousel was sent back to the Dentzel factory for some repairs.
1923 – The Fairgrounds Amusement Park in Memphis, TN purchased the carousel from Dentzel.
1975 – The Fairgrounds Amusement Park changed names to Libert

yland and the carousel was partially restored in
Memphis.
1980 – Grand Carousel named to the National Registry of Historic Places.
2005 – Libertyland closed to the public and the carousel was packaged for shipment and put into storage.
2015 – The Children’s Museum of Memphis was granted a lease for the carousel by the city of Memphis, with
expected shipment for restoration to occur spring 2015.
2017 – Anticipated installation and opening of The Memphis Grand Carousel.
