The Melvindale Police Supervisors Association, Melvindale Police Officers Association, and the Michigan Association of Police are proud to endorse Nicole M. Shkira for Mayor of Melvindale.
This endorsement is not something we take lightly. Historically, the MPSA and MPOA have remained neutral and refrained from becoming involved in political issues or campaigns. However, like many of you, we have noticed Melvindale’s steep decline over the past three and a half years, particularly in regards to public safety and the welfare of our union members, residents, and community.
During the past three and a half years, a staggering 20 employees have quit the Melvindale Police Department. This includes 3 sergeants, 4 corporals, 12 officers, and 1 ordinance officer. That’s nearly enough to staff the entire 24 officer department. We have lost knowledge, experience, and friends. We have become little more than a revolving door and training ground. This has posed a safety risk to police officers and the public. We recently hired 6 new police officers. Most have stated that if working conditions do not improve, they will be unable to afford to continue working in Melvindale, and they too will leave.
Our unions have pleaded with the incumbent mayor for help. We have identified problems, provided facts and information, and proposed solutions to make conditions safer for our union members, citizens, and the community. Unfortunately, appropriate solutions have not been implemented. It is the opinion of our unions that neither our members nor this city can withstand another 4 more years of the same.
This may be the most important election in Melvindale’s history. Without a vibrant, fully staffed, and proactive police department, the future of this city is bleak. Nicole has assured our unions that her top priority is public safety. Nicole understands that without a strong police department, you will not have a community where people want to live and raise a family. Nicole wants to increase police staffing and provided the resources to hire, attract, and retain police officers, and allow them to effectively fight crime and tackle blight and make Melvindale a safer place.
Our unions strongly encourage every registered voter in Melvindale to vote for Nicole M. Shkira in the August 8th primary election.
