🌎 EARTH DAY everyday! 🌎
On May 7th, 9:30 AM join Chief Spencer Lyons of the Onondaga Nation. Chief Lyons will be sharing the wisdom and guidelines of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy who follow the "Seventh Generation Principle." We are here as stewards and must show respect and responsibility towards Mother Earth and future generations. Details below ⬇️
NY Renews has been working with members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy for several years on a range of issues. As New York State continues to welcome big tech, data centers, and nuclear, all of which threaten Indigenous lands, lifeways, & sovereignty and undermine NY’s climate law, we are continuing to bring together Nations and the larger NY climate justice movement to best align around our shared struggles.
Called the Iroquois Confederacy by the French, it is properly called the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, meaning People of the Longhouse. It is made up of the Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, Senecas, and Tuscaroras (who joined in the 1700s). It was intended as a way to unite the Nations and create a peaceful means of decision making. Through the Confederacy, each of the Nations of the Haudenosaunee are united by a common goal to live in harmony. Often described as the oldest, participatory democracy on Earth, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy’s constitution is believed to be a model for the American Constitution.
Join us for this Cultural Awareness Training designed to build shared understanding and strengthen respectful collaboration.
This virtual session, led by Chief Spencer Lyons of the Onondaga Nation, will introduce participants to the foundational teachings and values that guide Haudenosaunee. The training will provide an overview of Haudenosaunee cosmology, social and governance structures, and the historical impacts of colonialism, and its continuing impacts today. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of Haudenosaunee perspectives and the knowledge needed to engage thoughtfully, act as informed allies, and work in a manner that honors the people, their culture, and the relationships that underpin our shared efforts.
