This draft was previously announced for public review in ANSI Standards Action. This recirculation provides an opportunity to review and comment on changes made to the draft following the previous review and comment-resolution process.

A highly anticipated revision to one of the key standards for school acoustics is now available.

ASA/ANSI S12.60-2026/Part 1, Acoustical Performance Criteria, Design Requirements, and Guidelines for Schools – Part 1: Permanent Schools, provides updated acoustical performance criteria and design requirements for classrooms and other learning spaces in permanent schools.

Approved by ANSI on August 31, 2026, the new edition revises ASA/ANSI S12.60/Part 1-2010 (R2024).

📣 Now Reaffirmed: ASA/ANSI S12.55 and Amendment 1

ASA Standards is pleased to announce the reaffirmation of ASA/ANSI S12.55-2012 / ISO 3745:2012 (R2026) and ASA/ANSI S12.55-2012/Amd 1-2021 / ISO 3745:2012/Amd 1:2017 (R2026).

The reaffirmations confirm that these documents have been reviewed and remain current as Nationally Adopted International Standards (NAIS).

📣 Two important developments in acoustics are worth watching.

ANSI recently highlighted ASA/ANSI S1.8-2016 (R2025), a standard that helps support consistency in acoustic reference values and measurement.

At the same time, there’s exciting news for school acoustics: the revised ASA/ANSI S12.60 Part 1 was approved by ANSI for publication on August 31, 2026!

Together, these standards reflect an important connection: how we measure sound matters—and so does how we apply those measurements to the spaces where people learn.

S1.8 provides a foundation for consistent acoustic measurement, while S12.60 establishes acoustical performance criteria, design requirements, and guidelines for school environments.

ASA/BSR S12.60-20XX/Part 1 — Acoustical Performance Criteria, Design Requirements, and Guidelines for Schools: Part 1, Permanent Schools — has been revised.

The new edition introduces updated approaches to classroom acoustics, including a new design-stage compliance option using average room sound absorption coefficient, expanded guidance on C50, G, and STI, and updated provisions for learning spaces and background noise.
