Happy , an annual recognition of the achievements, leadership, and lasting impact of women throughout history and today.

Each March, we honor the women who have shaped our communities, challenged injustice, and advanced equity across every sector of society. From grassroots organizers to groundbreaking leaders, women’s contributions are vital to our shared progress.

Women’s History Month is a time for both reflection and action. We reaffirm our commitment to gender equity, the empowerment of women and girls, and the ongoing work of dismantling barriers that limit opportunity and representation. Have you explored the Boston Women's Heritage Trail yet? Try to highlight women's voices this month by reading female authors or watching female directed movies.

Women’s history is human history, and it strengthens the future for all.

The Melrose Human Rights Commission celebrates Black History Month, an annual observance honoring the legacy, leadership, and contributions of Black Americans throughout history and today.

During the month of February, we recognize the resilience, brilliance, and cultural impact of Black individuals and communities who have shaped our nation’s past and continue to influence its future.

Black History Month is a time for reflection, education, and action. As a commission, we reaffirm our commitment to racial equity, the amplification of Black voices, and the pursuit of a future rooted in justice, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all. Boston has a broad set of events and initiatives for the 100th anniversary of Black History Month - check these out throughout February! https://www.boston.gov/departments/mayors-office/black-history-month

Black history is American history and it deserves recognition every day.

Today, we honor the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., not only as a leader of the civil rights movement but as a global champion of human rights.

Dr. King fought for the dignity, equality, and freedom of all people. His work transcended borders and identities, calling attention to poverty, labor rights, racism, and the deep moral crisis of war and violence. In his words, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

As we reflect today, the Melrose Human Rights Commission encourages our community to continue Dr. King’s work through action: standing up against injustice, advocating for equity, and building a world where every person’s rights are respected and protected.

On December 10th, the Melrose Human Rights Commission (MHRC) recognizes International Human Rights Day, a global observance commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations in 1948. This landmark document affirms that "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights."

As we reflect on the progress made since 1948, we must also confront the work that remains. Around the world and within our own communities, many still face discrimination, marginalization, and threats to their basic rights and dignity.

The MHRC works closely with City of Melrose leadership and partners to address issues of human and civil rights, reinforces a positive atmosphere in the community, and works to make Melrose One Community, Open to All.

Email us at [email protected], visit our website, or join us at our monthly meetings to engage.

Together, let us continue building a community where every person is safe, respected, and empowered to live fully and freely.

Today, the Melrose Human Rights Commission (MHRC) honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost to anti-transgender violence.

Originally founded in 1999 by advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith, Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is a solemn reminder of the urgent need to protect and uplift transgender individuals, especially Black and Brown trans women who are disproportionately affected by violence.

We stand in solidarity with our transgender neighbors, friends, and family members, and we recommit to building a community where everyone can live safely and authentically.
