A clinician made a mistake.

A former patient walked into their office years after treatment, and the first words out of the clinician's mouth were wrong.

The patient winced.

The clinician apologized.

Then something happened that neither of them forgot: the patient's shoulders dropped, and they let out a small exhale.

Why did such a simple moment matter so much?

In this reflection on identity, belonging, and mental health, we explore the hidden cost of feeling unseen—and the profound impact of being recognized for who you are.

Many clinicians are scared to use ERP for OCD. And honestly, that makes sense.

ERP can feel intimidating at first. You’re asking clients to face the very things that trigger fear and uncertainty, and most times regarding taboo topics. Without proper training, it’s easy to worry about “getting it wrong,” pushing too hard, or making symptoms worse.

But avoiding ERP doesn’t protect clients. It often leaves them stuck in the cycle of OCD longer.

The good news? ERP is a learnable, evidence-based treatment, and you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Our live online training series is designed to help clinicians build confidence, competence, and practical ERP skills step-by-step.

ERP Foundations I with Dr. Lisa Coyne:
Dr. Lisa Coyne is one of the leading voices in OCD and anxiety treatment, with more than 25 years of experience using ERP and ACT with children, teens, and families. She is an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, founder of McLean’s OCDI Jr., IOCDF BTTI faculty, and a member of the IOCDF Scientific & Clinical Advisory Board. Her teaching style combines deep clinical expertise with warmth, practicality, and real-world application.

Through video, handouts, and practice assignments, participants will leave feeling more prepared to assess and treat OCD using ERP.

ERP Foundations II with Dr. Jason Krompinger:
Dr. Jason Krompinger is an expert clinician, trainer, and consultant specializing in OCD and related disorders. As Director of Clinical Training at the New England Center for OCD and Anxiety, IOCDF BTTI faculty member, and Lecturer at Harvard Medical School, he brings extensive experience helping clinicians translate ERP principles into effective, flexible, real-world treatment.

Perfect for beginning and intermediate clinicians looking for support in applying ERP in real clinical work. Clinicians deserve support in learning ERP, and clients deserve access to effective treatment. Register for our courses here: https://www.newenglandocd.org/ces-training

When scary things happen close to home, children look to the adults around them for comfort, guidance, and reassurance — but knowing what to say can feel overwhelming.

Join us virtually on May 28 at 5:30 PM for a free community conversation facilitated by Dr. Lisa Coyne on how to support children through difficult and uncertain times.

We’ll discuss:
• Age-appropriate conversations about scary events
• Supporting emotional reactions
• Signs a child may need additional support

A headache becomes a brain tumor. A mole becomes melanoma. A stomach ache becomes something catastrophic.

That’s how health anxiety works. It turns uncertainty into fear and fear into endless checking, Googling, and reassurance-seeking. Our latest blog explores the cycle of health anxiety and how evidence-based treatment can help break it. Read it here: https://www.newenglandocd.org/when-every-mole-is-cancer-health-anxiety

If you can’t stop Googling symptoms, checking your body, or asking for reassurance that you’re okay, you’re not alone.

Health anxiety can pull you into a cycle of fear and temporary relief that never quite sticks, and it can feel exhausting. In this session, Dr. Lisa Coyne and Dr. Josh Spitalnick will walk through what’s actually going on and how evidence-based treatment can help you break that cycle.

Feel free to join if this resonates, or share it with someone in your life who might need it.
