On Saturday, Sept 19th from 9 am – 12 noon the Melrose Conservation Commission is holding a volunteer clean-up of invasive plants in and around Ell Pond. We’ll meet in the parking lot adjacent to the dog park. A few tasks that we need help with:
~ We need to paddle out into the pond and gather trash and any additional water chestnuts that may be lurking, especially along the shorelines of the pond that tends to appears following rain storms. We have several kayaks that volunteers can use, but if you have a stand up paddle board, kayak or canoe, please bring it.
~ We have a growing number of tree limbs and logs floating in the water that we’d like to pull out onto the shore if we can. We also have some fallen trees that we’d to pull out, we’ll try and do this via our kayaks or from the shore itself where accessible.
~ We want to do a full search for trash hidden around the park, we’ll explore the trails and along the shore line as well, this includes the sections of the park behind the DCR pool, and along Main Street as well.
~ We’ll also be pruning / cutting some invasive vines in and around the park. There’s plenty to do here and we’ll be organizing additional volunteer workdays to continue these efforts.
