💔 In Loving Memory of My Beautiful Jackjack 🌈🐇
A little over two weeks ago, I very suddenly and tragically lost my beautiful, sweet Jackjack. I needed some time to process the loss before I could bring myself to look through her pictures and share her story.
Jack came into my life five years ago, when she was only about 10 days old. The finder's dog had caught her, leaving her with the loss of her right eye and an injury to her back left leg. Because of her one eye, her finders named her “Captain Jack.” When we discovered that she was actually a girl, she kept the name Jack. 💕
Jack spent several weeks here recovering from her injuries. As with all the wildlife who come through my doors, the goal was always to get her healthy enough to return to the wild. But Jack had other plans. ❤️
Jack's wild instincts just never kicked in. I even moved her outside into a pre-release enclosure for two weeks, hoping she would become more independent. But every time I went out to feed her, she would run right up to me to say hello. It became clear that Jack would never survive out in the wild. So, she became a house bunny, joined our family of domestic rescue bunnies.
And what a special little bunny she was!
When tiny Tutu arrived as nothing more than a little ball of fluff, Jack helped raise her. Tutu really brought out Jack’s maternal instincts. From then on, whenever Jack heard a baby bunny crying, she would come running and box my legs as if to say, “Excuse me! That baby needs protecting!” She took her self-appointed role as baby protector very seriously. 🥹❤️
Jack also had a special way of welcoming every domestic rescue bunny who came through here. She would greet and groom them, offering comfort and making them feel at home. She had such a gentle, nurturing spirit, and it was beautiful to watch her share that with so many who needed it.
Of course, Jack also knew how to shamelessly beg for treats from absolutely anyone and everyone. There was simply no ignoring her when she decided it was treat time! Her favorite indulgent ritual? A small piece of banana every morning. 🍌 She knew what she wanted, and I was going to get nothing else done until I gave it to her!
More recently, Jack had bonded with my big brown bunny, Juno. They had become special companions, and he misses her very much. We all do. There is an emptiness here now that her little presence once filled, and I miss seeing her sweet face, her familiar routines, and all the little things that made her so uniquely Jack.
Jack’s life may have started with pain and a very uncertain future, but she found safety, love, and a home where she was cherished. She never made it back to the wild, but she found her place in my heart and in our little bunny family. She touched so many lives, both human and bunny, simply by being the sweet, loving girl she was.
I wish we could have had more time together, my beautiful girl. Losing you has left a hole in my heart that words cannot begin to describe.
Thank you for five years of love, laughter, bunny kisses, treat begging, and the privilege of being your person. You were so much more than a little one who came here to heal. You became family. You were loved beyond measure, and you always will be.
Binky free, my beautiful Jackjack. 🌈🐇💔
