A New Home
At EcoSchool, students are invited to think deeply about identity, belonging, and the journeys that shape who we are. Through carefully selected literature, students encounter stories that reflect courage, resilience, and the challenge of living between cultures.
📚 Students are currently exploring a wide range of texts centering the immigrant experience, including:
• Personal narrative picture books like Grandfather’s Journey and Tea with Milk by Allen Say - stories that illuminate family, memory, and heritage
• Cultural storytelling in books like Family Pictures by Carmen Lomas Garza, celebrating traditions and everyday life
• Informational texts such as Coming to America: The Story of Immigration by Betsy Maestro, building historical understanding
• Primary sources and oral histories from Ellis Island, allowing students to hear real immigrant voices and experiences
• Articles and historical accounts that connect past to present
• Visual texts, including photography like The Steerage and iconic American landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, deepening students’ understanding through art and symbolism
As they engage with these texts, students grapple with meaningful questions:
What does it mean to leave one home and build another?
What challenges do immigrants face and how do they show strength in the face of those challenges?
This work is more than a unit of study, it is an opportunity for students to develop empathy, expand their worldview, and recognize the shared humanity in every story. We are proud of the way our students are engaging with these ideas: with curiosity, respect, and open hearts. 💛
