Pictures from the Lima airport with Tonny and Silvia. This is the end of our 2018 volunteering trip to Peru but also the beginning of many more trips to come.
We come home recharged, with our hearts filled with love and with the desire and plans to continue supporting the social projects at Villa El Salvador.
Thanks Tonny and Silvia Palomino we love you very, very much 😘

We had an early start on Saturday; we woke up at 4:15 am, had breakfast and were out the door by 5:30 to start our 4 hour trip to our final destination, Huacachina. The 7 of us rode in a van driven by Marco, the Palomino’s neighbor. Our first stop was in Cañete, a beach town with an incredible view of the beach from the cliffside. Then we stopped at Paracas, another coastal town, where we took a guided boat tour of the Islas Baleares. One of the islands had a very large scale geoglyph, that may have served as a beacon to mariners. The other islands had red footed bo***es, Humbodlt penguins and many seals. The islands were mostly devoid of people but there were a few abandoned buildings from the early 1900s when they were used to collect and later sell guano as fertilizer. Once we returned to shore we drove to Caleta Lagunillas, a large desert. From there we visited the beaches Playa Roja and La Mina. We swam in La Mina beach where the water was freezing!! There we enjoyed jumping off a nearby rock. We didn’t stay long here because of the temperature of the water and also because there were a few other places we wanted to stop by before Huacachina.
We had lunch close to 4:30 pm and from there headed to Huacachina. Huacachina is a village built around a small oasis surrounded by sand dunes. There we took a 10 seat dune buggy and rode the dunes. On some of the dunes we were able to get out and ride down the dunes with boards. We had a lot of fun and the entire day was the perfect way to end our trip in Peru.

Today, Friday March 16, was our last visit to the Martincitos and the orphanage Casa Hogar.
This morning at the Martincitos I had the pleasure of teaching more pranayam and yoga poses to the “abuelitos”, they did a great job!! We also served breakfast/lunch, helped them with their art workshop and assisted in the kitchen one last time.
We learned today that part of the donations raised will be used to travel with the Martincitos this winter to a town 2 hours away from Villa. This town is warmer and has a beautiful park with beautiful spaces for different activities. The rest of the donation will be used to help an “abuelito” whose house is at risk. Some of the houses merely have a corrugated metal roof, loosely placed bricks for walls, and a few don’t even have a toilette. So based on need the Center will assess who will get help next.
Saying good bye to the seniors was hard because in such a short time we became close to them. We ended our morning at the Martincitos with hugs, kisses and lots of photos. Once they saw we started taking pictures they would ask for more pictures.
We were very touched by this display of affection; it was really hard not to cry in front of them 😢.
We are planning to continue helping the Center donating a monthly amount to provide for transportation for those seniors who don’t have a family member to bring them.
In the afternoon we visited the Casa Hogar, played games with the kids and also hugged them good bye.

Today, March 14, Marco and I went back to Martincitos to spend time with the seniors. The day started with yoga stretches and pranayam. They enjoyed the yoga and I hope to teach again one more time this coming Friday. I enjoyed teaching the elderly so much that I’ve considered to continue when I get back to the States 😊
Marco, Christian and Tonny went to the market to buy 4 metric tons of potatoes... lots of bags! Each bag weighted 60 kg and between the three of them they loaded and unloaded the tuck!
While they were busy doing hard work I went to the market with the Center’s cook to get what was needed to prepare today’s lunch. Came back and spent the next couple of hours in the kitchen preparing lunch.
We helped serve the seniors and then sat with the staff to taste duck with rice. It was delicious. The ducks were a donation from an abuelito who could not take care of his ducks anymore. So he decided to share them with his friends at the Center.
After lunch we went back home to rest for a little bit before going to the Casa Hogar. We brought with us all the donations we had brought for the children and also gave Madre Ines part of the money that was raised back home. They were very grateful because the orphanage is constantly receiving new kids and they need money to feed them.
So excited to be in Villa El Salvador and to have the opportunity to serve 💕

Today was a busy day. We visited many different programs around the community as well as a couple of the houses where the martinsitos live when they aren’t at the program on MWF. The first program we visited was the theater, Arena y Estelas, where they converted 3 adjacent houses to create an area large enough to put on plays and create props. Because of political violence in the town a group of young people started making plays about human rights. They also offer circus training, dance classes and more for young minds to discover their talents. From what they learn there they bring the art to other schools around Peru and even around the country. They also travel out of the country to Europe to share and promote. The local theater hosts many groups from all around Peru and internationally for plays. After, we visited one of the other day care centers, Asociación Vida y Esperanza, there they had children ages 3-5 and they also offered programs for the mothers such as Zumba. The center has a cafeteria for all three meals also has a second floor that has areas for dance, aerobics and English. They offer help for homework assigned in the schools. Close by there was a clinic/ pharmacy, San Martín de Porres, located in a place where there is no medical center and a very poor area. Is a good place for mothers, with specialties like gynecology as well as orthodontics and others. It is also a lab that can do tests and offers house visits to people that are elderly and sick. Finally we went to an after school program called “Proyecto Deporte y Vida” where they had a large center to accommodate many kids from K to 6th grade along with an outdoor court for larger activities where they learn about respect and kindness for others through sports and games. After lunch we went back to Asociación Vida y Esperanza and helped with the younger kids, 2-3 years old, until the parents came to pick them up.
The plan is to continue supporting/helping out the community after the volunteering is over. This is just the beginning!

Monday, March 12:
The morning started at 8:30 at the Martincitos, the Center for the Senior Citizens. There we were greeted by friendly seniors who gave us hugs and kisses and wanted to talk with us. They had a special day with music, dancing and cake ... they were celebrating March birthdays.
We spent most of the time helping in the kitchen and serving breakfast and lunch.
We got back home close to 2 pm, had lunch and after a short break we left again. In the afternoon we went to the Casa Hogar to help the kids with their homework and played after. Had a great time playing “cementerio” a ball game.
