There are about four million acres of lawn in Florida and much of it is not used for anything. Replacing much of our unused lawns in our yards and communities with bird-friendly, pollinator-friendly, habitat-building groves of trees and shrubs is another earth-friendly option, because the larger plants actually cool the air through transpiration. A few of us went up to check out FNPS The Villages garden tour and it was a lovely day. We ran out of time because we didn’t start right away at 7:30 and there were so many lovely spaces (15 on the list!). You can still do a lot in a small space with HOA landscaping restrictions. .10 acres was a common lot size in the homes we visited.

Celebrate by converting sterile, poisoned lawns to pollinator-friendly and bird-friendly habitat. Pollinators are necessary for many of our flowering plants. We can and should make the effort to attract our native pollinators by stopping all landscape-wide pesticides and by planting a wide variety of native plants arranged in ways that make it easier for pollinators to thrive. Some can only fly a short distance to find nectar, so your yard may be their entire universe.
