There is another story behind the poppy—the hands that make it.
For generations, Veterans have helped produce memorial poppies. The tradition has provided Veterans with meaningful activity, while the poppies themselves help generate support for Veterans, military personnel, and their families. In 1952 alone, nearly 9,700 disabled Veterans produced more than 26 million poppies for Auxiliary distribution.
When you hold a memorial poppy, remember: its story is about more than remembrance. It's also about purpose, dignity, and service.

In 1921, at its first National Convention, the American Legion Auxiliary adopted the red poppy as its memorial flower. In 1924, the Auxiliary and The American Legion instituted the national Poppy Program, and the Auxiliary would go on to take a leading role in carrying the program forward.
Generation after generation, Auxiliary members have shared the poppy's story and turned remembrance into service for our veterans, military, and their families.
We didn't simply inherit the poppy. We inherited the responsibility to keep its meaning alive.

On September 27, 1920, at its second National Convention in Cleveland, The American Legion officially named the red poppy its official flower.
What began in the fields of World War I was becoming part of America's commitment to remember those who served and sacrificed.
More than a century later, that little red flower still speaks when words aren't enough.

🌺 PART 3 | The Poppy Movement Grows
The promise didn't stop with one person—or one country.
Frenchwoman Anna Guérin helped carry the poppy movement forward, promoting the flower as a symbol of remembrance and helping the idea spread internationally.
From the battlefields of Europe, the red poppy was becoming a worldwide reminder that sacrifice must never be forgotten.

🌺 PART 2 | A Poppy Worn in Remembrance
Before the poppy became a national tradition, one woman made a personal promise.
In 1918, inspired by John McCrae's In Flanders Fields, Moina Michael wrote We Shall Keep the Faith and pledged to wear a red poppy in remembrance of those who died in service. Her determination helped transform a simple flower into an enduring symbol of remembrance.

🌺 POPPY HISTORY: FROM THE FIELDS TO THE PROMISE
Part 1 | In Flanders Fields
Before the poppy became something we wore, distributed, or held in our hands, it grew among the battlefields of World War I.
In 1915, Canadian physician and soldier Lt. Col. John McCrae wrote In Flanders Fields after the death of a fellow soldier. His words captured the image of red poppies growing among the graves of the fallen.
Those poppies would come to represent something much greater than a flower—remembrance, sacrifice, and a promise not to forget.
Over the coming weeks, we'll follow the remarkable journey of the poppy from the battlefields of Flanders to the symbol of remembrance and service we carry forward today.
