That flag looks so great atop the new 'secondary' flagpole at the Meeme Liberty Pole site on XX and M in the Town of Meeme. Have you stopped by yet? You can't see it because of the angle of the photo, but there are actually two flagples, the silver one in the forefront is 60 feet tall. The Meeme Liberty Pole (with the Eagle weathervane on top) is 62 feet tall. The US and America250 flags in this photo are actually on two different flagpoles!!

On Flag Day, playing "To the Color" serves as a solemn salute to the Stars and Stripes and the ideals it represents—freedom, unity, sacrifice, and patriotism. For more than a century, the Meeme Liberty Pole has stood as a symbol of patriotism, freedom, and community pride. After enduring Wisconsin's harsh weather, countless seasons, and the weight of the American flag, the current pole is beginning to show its age.

To ensure that Old Glory continues to fly proudly over this historic landmark for generations to come, American Legion Post 477 has launched a capital campaign to raise $25,000 to cover the cost of a new 60-foot commercial-grade flagpole, complete with an internal winch system and ground-mounted lighting.

⚠️Most importantly, the historic Meeme Liberty Pole is NOT being replaced and will remain on site.

The new flagpole will serve as the primary flag display, while the historic Liberty Pole will continue to be preserved as the centerpiece of this important landmark. During 2026, the Liberty Pole will proudly fly an America250 commemorative flag, and in future years it will display the American flag on special patriotic holidays and occasions.

With the support of our community, the new flagpole will be dedicated on July 4, 2026, during our celebration of America's 250th Birthday.

Every donation helps preserve an important piece of local and national history while ensuring that the American flag continues to fly over the Meeme Liberty Pole site 365 days a year 24 hours a day (weather permitting).

A History Lesson from the Meeme Liberty Pole

The Meeme Liberty Pole stands as a lasting symbol of patriotism, freedom, and community pride.

Its story began in 1852, when Nicholas Dittmar erected the original Liberty Pole. After that pole was lost, Civil War Veterans rebuilt it in 1889, reaffirming the community's commitment to honoring our nation's ideals. When the second pole was destroyed by lightning in 1916, local residents once again rallied together, raising $400 to construct the Liberty Pole that stands today.

Dedicated on September 3, 1922, by the Kiel American Legion, the current pole is constructed of gun metal, stands 62 feet tall, and it's believed that it's one of only three Liberty Poles still standing in the United States. In 1974, the site was recognized as a Wisconsin State Historic Landmark, preserving its place in our state's history.

In April 2022, American Legion Post 477 and Sons of the American Legion Squadron 477 accepted custodial responsibility for this treasured landmark. Since then, we have been honored to continue its legacy through preservation and restoration efforts.

Highlights of our work include:
✅ Planning and hosting the Liberty Pole's 100th Anniversary Rededication in September 2022, attended by more than 175 people
✅ Installing electrical service and lighting to showcase the monument and allowing the flag to fly 24 x 7
✅ Repairing the halyard and pulley system
✅ Restoring the historic weather vane atop the pole

The Meeme Liberty Pole is more than a historic structure—it is a reminder of the generations who came before us, their love of country, and their commitment to preserving our freedoms. We are proud to serve as its stewards and to ensure that this unique symbol of American heritage continues to inspire future generations.

Did you notice activity at the Meeme Liberty Pole? The footing is going in today. The secondary flag pole will be installed in 8-10 days as the cement needs to harden.

The 62 foot tall Liberty Pole will remain in place, and will continue to fly flags on special days to include the 4th of July!

The 'new' flagpole is 60 feet tall and 'hurricane' strength. We'll fly a 12x18 flag 365 days 24 hours a day, as long as the weather allows.

The Celebration of Freedom honoring America's 250th birthday is at 10 am on the 4th of July beginning at the Meeme Liberty Pole. Please join our celebration!

Our Celebration of Freedom & Meeme Liberty Pole capital campaign is underway!

We’re excited to kick things off with a generous donation from the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 477 in support of the new secondary 60-foot flagpole!
