In Freemasonry, V.I.T.R.I.O.L. is an acronym for the Latin phrase "Visita Interiora Terrae, Rectificandoque, Invenies Occultum Lapidem," which translates to "Visit the interior of the earth, and purifying/rectifying it, you will find the hidden stone". It signifies an introspective journey for self-discovery and spiritual purification, often appearing in the Chamber of Reflection.

Key Aspects of the Masonic Meaning:

The Journey Inward: It represents a, search within oneself for truth, enlightenment, and personal improvement, rather than looking only to the outside world.

Symbolic Purification: Just as acid (vitriol) breaks down materials to purify them, this phrase encourages candidates to break down their egos, vices, and superfluous qualities to reveal their true, inner self.
Alchemical Roots: Stemming from 15th-century alchemy (often attributed to Basilius Valentinus), it symbolizes the transformation of "base metal" (an unrefined person) into "gold" (a perfected, enlightened person).

The "Hidden Stone": This refers to finding one's true, divine nature or wisdom within, often linked to the "Philosopher's Stone".

Usage: It is frequently found written on walls in the Chamber of Reflection, a, space used for contemplation before the initiate takes their obligations, particularly in certain, older or European jurisdictions.

The phrase emphasizes that the path to wisdom requires intense self-reflection, personal accountability, and the rectification of one's own character.

“One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. ‘Which road do I take?’ she asked. ‘Where do you want to go?’ was his response. ‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the cat, ‘it doesn’t matter.”
― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

No, Lewis, it does matter. Every step you take is a choice. Every movement should be well thought out. When you first filled out the petition, your investigating committee, your initiation, was all a matter of personal choice.

Each and every day, we are at a crossroads. When we step into the Temple before anything is ever done, we are asked one simple question. Is it of your own free will and accord?

The second question is just as important. What came you hear to do? That requires some thought and focus. What came YOU HERE to do? Not someone else, not somewhere else. Right here, right now. This moment is all that matters.

This is your journey, your crossroad. No one else's. Sure, there are other twists and turns down the road. But you are on this fork right now. What choice do you make? It matters.

Who cares what someone else thinks? My opinion doesn’t matter. The guy next to you doesn’t matter. What do you want for yourself, and why are you here? That matters?

Yes, your Brothers are there to help you. But you should have a focus. What is that focus?

We say we make good men better. That is not perfect, men. None of us is perfect. That may be something we forget.

What is success? Because it is very personal? You cannot measure your success by someone else's achievements.

Masonry is a very personal journey and we only get what we give and strive for.

Success is not where you are to other people. Success is where you are today from yesterday. Their success is theirs….What is yours?

I love you and may we govern ourselves accordingly

What came you here to do? That question has three specific answers. All are very interesting in some conversations I have had with Masons and Non-Masons alike.

A while back, I spoke to an Elder Priestess in my Spiritual Tradition, and she talked about being “Lost in the Mysteries”. When a person has so much “tunnel vision” that they lose focus on their goal. Can that happen within Masonry? Of course it can.

Is it possible that we spend so much time being “Masonic” that we lose sight of what Masonry is all about? Do we lose sight of that very question? What came you here to do?

Have I lost sight of myself? Maybe I have. Maybe I need to look at my shadow self and evaluate myself and my journey?

My favorite card in the Tarot is The Hermit. That struggle for growth and the quest for your inner being. The card shows a wise man standing on a mountain top holding a lantern of light. Is that light held for others or for you first? This is a very important question.

When we climb that mountain and staircase, there are some struggles. Those struggles allow us to see who we really are. Who we really are may not be who we think we are.

But Masonry provides the element of reality. Again, one of the largest Masonic tools is the mirror. Why? You see who you really are.

Bro. Jason Rudder has a work I am looking at called “Lifting the Veil on the Dark Side of the Light”. I just got this work yesterday, and I am currently reviewing his thoughts and will be doing the work.

Why? That’s a simple question. What came you here to do? Climb that mountain, walk that staircase, lean about you…and succeed. It is the very, very thing posted around the oracle of Delphi. “Know Thyself”

I love you and may we govern ourselves accordingly.
