Colorado Section of the Society for Range Management Promoting & enhancing the stewardship of rangelands to meet human needs based on science & policy.

We are the professional society dedicated to supporting persons who work with rangelands and have a commitment to their sustainable use. Rangelands comprise almost one-half of all the lands in the world. They are extremely important to society for the goods and services they produce and for the ecological services they provide. SRM is dedicated to the conservation and sustainable management of rangelands for the benefit of current societies and for future generations.

Signs of restoration success in Colorado! 🌟
Strategically adding a mix of branches, stones and mud structures slows down water flow in this degraded stream channel and revitalizes meadows, combatting impacts of drought. 🌱 In the photo on the right, note the width of the waterway is expanding while sediment is filling in and starting to reconnect the meadows.

Happy (almost) National Prairie Day!

Tomorrow, we celebrate the prairies and grasslands that sustain wildlife, support ranching communities, filter our water, store carbon, and provide open spaces for recreation and inspiration.

A special shoutout to North Dakota and Colorado, where governors have officially proclaimed June 6 as Prairie Day, recognizing the ecological, cultural, and economic importance of these iconic landscapes. In Colorado, Governor Jared Polis highlighted the vital role prairies play in supporting biodiversity, climate resilience, agriculture, and outdoor recreation. In North Dakota, partners across the state are gathering at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park to celebrate with prairie walks, family activities, and a "Prairie to Plate" lunch.

There are countless ways to celebrate today:
- Visit a local prairie or grassland
- Go birding and look for grassland species
- Take a prairie walk with family and friends
- Share your favorite prairie photos
- Thank the farmers, ranchers, Indigenous communities, conservationists, and land stewards who care for these working landscapes

As we celebrate the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, National Prairie Day is a reminder that healthy prairies and grasslands benefit all of us, from the food we eat and the water we drink to the wildlife we cherish and the communities we call home.

🎉 Quivira is hiring!

We are looking for two positions in our Soil to Supper program, a grant-funded program which helps livestock producers in the Southwest build financial resilience and market access through practices that improve soil and water health.

Soil to Supper director: The Soil to Supper program director brings strong experience managing conservation programs on rangelands and effectively builds trust with livestock producers, community partners, and agency staff. They are equally comfortable thinking strategically about program design and getting into the details of budgets, grant deliverables, and day-to-day coordination needed to keep a complex program running smoothly.

Soil to Supper manager: The Soil to Supper program manager brings strong experience providing livestock producers with conservation-related technical assistance, and enthusiasm for how conservation practices can support both ecological health and producer viability. They have experience working in or alongside USDA conservation programs, particularly NRCS, and are comfortable helping producers navigate conservation planning, technical assistance, and program implementation processes.

Coming up on May 27th, a live virtual drought workshop.

It's time to introduce our three great panelists for When in Drought (2.0) on May 27 at 7 pm.

Without a rangeland health and management perspective, a discussion on ranching in drought won't be much - to address these questions, we will have Dr. Derek Scasta. In his role as Director of the Laramie Research and Extension Center (LREC) and Interim Associate Dean and Director of Extension at the University of Wyoming, Dr. Scasta has fielded many questions and devoted much time to understanding ranching through drought conditions in Wyoming.

Come prepared with any questions you may have for him or drop them in the comments below!

Wildfires can close trails and char campgrounds. But exactly how recreators respond in the years after burns hasn’t been well documented at scale.

But some data is starting to paint a picture: https://buff.ly/ssxqcGR
