Hello everyone. Today, we need to share with you information about the filly “Whisper,” pictured below, and the current situation concerning her inside the park. Early this past Saturday morning, mare Pepper (Serendipity) of Buster’s (Illinois) band was found with a new filly. Pepper was off from her band with her foal, which is not uncommon. This is her first foal, and for her to stay with Whisper until she was ready while the band moved showed her strength as a mother already.

By late afternoon, Whisper was up and running around. For the first time in hours, Pepper went to get water and then tried to rejoin the band. Another horse tracker and I were there when this happened and witnessed what followed. Unfortunately, through no fault of her own, Pepper was separated from her foal, and in the end, Starlet (Oakley) had Pepper’s filly. We called the park and observed the situation until dark, but it did not resolve itself.

We have been monitoring Whisper and the band every day this week and will continue to do so. Several options were presented and discussed with the park, but at this time, they will not be intervening. I understand the frustration surrounding this situation, and I encourage you to express it. However, keep in mind that some of us are experiencing this in real time, and it is extremely difficult to watch, so please be respectful. We will provide updates as often as we can with any further developments. For now, please keep Whisper and Pepper in your thoughts. Thank you.

River has always been one of my favorites to photograph.

He feels everything out loud. Every step, every shift, every breath. He doesn’t just move, he tells you something with it.

But last night… he was different.

Soft. Peaceful. Glowing.

The sun was going down, it was 75 degrees, and everything felt still for a second. And there he was, just existing in it. Not surviving. Not bracing. Just… being.

And I couldn’t stop thinking about how far he’s come.

Born into a holding facility instead of the wild.
Passed through the inmate training program.
Transferred again.
Adopted at seven.
And then somehow… still ended up skin and bones and neglected.

And now look at you.

Full. Floaty. Safe.

This is what you were always supposed to be.

Your place was never in those systems.

And if it can’t be in the wild, your place is here.

And I will never stop being grateful that you found your way home to us.

We are watching the past vanish.

So what are you going to do.

Survivors of the Badlands

03/20/2026

The almighty bison.

This land knew them first. Before us. Before everything. Nearly gone from the world. And still they found their way back. This is why they are part of the story in Survivors of the Badlands.

Today is the day.

We’re releasing the first clip from our documentary Survivors of the Badlands as part of our final campaign to finish the film.

We chose this clip very intentionally.

It captures something humans almost never witness in the wild.

A moment of interspecies mourning between bison and a wild horse.

A quiet reminder that the animals we fight for are deeply sentient, deeply connected, and capable of bonds far more complex than most people realize.

This moment was captured by Tiffany of Dakota Grown Photos, who has spent years documenting this herd through every season. The story is further brought to life through the voices of Deb Lee Carson Photography and Patrick Springer.
____________

After years of filming, we are incredibly close to finishing the documentary.

But we need your help to get there.

We are trying to raise $20,000 to complete post production for Survivors of the Badlands: The Wild Horses of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

These horses are not just part of the scenery.

They are living history.

This film tells the story of the roughly 200 wild horses who have called Theodore Roosevelt National Park home since its earliest days and the fight to ensure they remain there.

If you believe their story deserves to be told…

If you believe wild horses belong on this landscape…

If you believe wild still matters…

Please help us bring this film home.

Next week Wild Lands Wild Horses will be releasing the first clip from our documentary Survivors of the Badlands as part of a campaign to raise the final funds needed to finish the film.

We chose this first clip very intentionally.

It captures something that humans rarely witness in the wild. A moment of interspecies mourning between bison and a wild horse.

It is a quiet reminder that the animals we fight for are deeply sentient, deeply connected, and capable of bonds far more complex than most people realize.

We have Dakota Grown Photos to thank for this moment. Her dedication to documenting this herd year round has allowed her to witness some of the most magical and heartbreaking moments in the lives of these horses.

Over the next few weeks we will begin sharing more clips from the film as we move toward the finish line and fundraising goal.

Because after years of filming, we are incredibly close to completing the documentary.

The Gray Ghost clip will premiere Tuesday at 9 AM EST on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1Cr4hKSxoE (You can set a reminder)

When it launches, we will also share how you can help us bring this documentary home!

About the film

Survivors of the Badlands tells the story of the roughly 200 wild horses who have called Theodore Roosevelt National Park home since before the park was created. These horses are not simply animals on a landscape.

They are living history. A reflection of resilience, survival, and the wild spirit that helped inspire the park itself.

But their future has never been guaranteed. The film explores their history, the political battles surrounding their management, the question of eradication, the voices fighting for their protection, and the deeply personal stories of the individual horses who make up this remarkable herd.

Thank you for sharing this journey with us! And please share!
