Today your Medina Firefighters kept getting the station ready for summer by bringing out the department’s antique hose cart and setting it in front of the station. The cart has been taken apart and restored many times over the years by past and present firefighters and it stands as a reminder of our history that reaches back to the incorporation of the Village of Medina in 1832.

We also helped Jim Hancock and the Medina Tourism Committee as we do every spring and fall to help get the village ready by moving items from City Hall to the visitors center in Rotary Park. Santa’s chair and other winter pieces were brought back to City Hall for the season and the visitors center displays were set up for summer.

Yesterday your Medina Firefighters took a little time between calls to spruce up the station grounds and our Firefighters Memorial in preparation for Memorial Day. We were lucky to have several students from Medina High School’s IMPACT Team join us for their IMPACT Day.

Together we cleaned up the landscaping, spread fresh mulch and planted flowers from Roberts Farm Market.

The memorial includes a monument honoring the Medina Firefighters who gave their lives in the Line of Duty, including Chief James Schooley in 1934 and Lt. Darwin Enrenreich in 1954. The surrounding bricks carry the names of past Medina Professional and Callman Firefighters who have passed away.

This memorial area was built and dedicated in September 2013 by the Medina Firefighters Benevolent Association and it remains a special place for our department.

Your Medina Firefighters are excited to celebrate one of our members graduating from the Fire Academy. It’s a major milestone built on hard work, dedication and a whole lot of sweat. Now that the academy is behind him, it’s time to get back to work and put those new skills to use.

A little sunshine and some warmer weather made for a great day to train. In between calls yesterday, your Medina Firefighters spent time working on pump operations training with Probationary Firefighter Pilecki, who will be going to the fire academy in August.

Your Medina Firefighters were at Baxter Healthcare in the Village this morning conducting fire extinguisher training for a group of employees. We’ve worked with Baxter for many years and truly appreciate the strong teamwork between their staff and our crews, as well as their ongoing commitment to safety, both during emergencies and through proactive training.

Today’s session included classroom instruction along with hands-on training using our fire extinguisher prop, giving participants the opportunity to practice real-world skills in a controlled environment.

We’re proud to offer this type of training to businesses throughout Medina, as well as CPR/AED, Basic First Aid, and Stop the Bleed courses for individuals, organizations, and workplaces.

This afternoon, your Medina Firefighters handled two separate calls within minutes of each other in the Village, both for a reported odor of smoke in the basement.

Engine 11 responded to the first call and quickly investigated, determining there was no emergency. While crews were still operating there, a second call was dispatched. With the Chief responding to the second incident, Engine 11 cleared the first location promptly and made their way over, ensuring both calls were handled without delay.

This is a clear example of how quickly resources can be stretched, even in a short window, and highlights the importance of adequate staffing and equipment to meet the needs of our community.

Prior to the reduction in staffing to four firefighters per shift, we would have responded with both an engine and a ladder truck, allowing one unit to be diverted to the second call without impacting coverage. Thankfully, both incidents were handled quickly and did not turn out to be working fires.

Last night your Medina Firefighters from First Platoon, under the command of Lt. Fisher, responded with Engine 11 to a report of a tree on fire in the backyard of a residence near the Village Wastewater Treatment Plant. One crew had just returned from an ambulance call with Shelby Fire Company.

Upon arrival, crews found a large tree burning, approximately 150 feet off the roadway. After confirming there were no power lines involved, firefighters stretched a hose line and quickly brought the fire under control.

It was also determined with assistance from the residents that the tree was located on Village property. Medina Police and DPW Superintendent Watts were requested to the scene. Additionally, the closest fire hydrant was found to be non-functioning and was reported to the DPW.

Special note: The two red flashing lights on the front of Engine 11 were taken from the recently retired Engine 10. It’s great to see the legacy of Engine 10 continues on.
