SPROUTS recently gathered to explore the importance of the pollination process. In addition to planting their garden, recognizing the value of the role various pollinators play and how humans can facilitate this process is vital to successfully supporting a healthy ecosystem and food supply. To reinforce the various pollinators active in our gardens, young learners crafted several paper pollinators of their choosing.

On a recent June evening, excited SPROUTS planted a variety of bulbs, seeds and plants in a raised bed at the Medina Community Garden. Under the guidance of Master Gardener Volunteer Leaders, eager gardeners used their knowledge from previous soil and seed lessons to work together to lay out and plant three themed gardens. Young gardeners added a healthy helping of compost to each of their herb and vegetable plants. Along with their families they will water and tend the garden through out the growing season. Excited gardeners would agree that summer growing is officially on its way!

Following months of extensive planning, the Ella Canavan pollinator garden 🪴 is approaching completion. Second-grade students and their instructors worked in conjunction with Master Gardener Volunteers to enhance their courtyard gardens. The planting of the pollinator garden was the culmination of a comprehensive study of bees, pollinators, beneficial insects, worms, vermicomposting, healthy ecosystems, habitats, seeds, and winter sowing. On a sunny day in May, student gardeners convened to create the pollinator garden by planting and watering an assortment of native plants, perennials, and zinnia seeds, which will attract and continue to support the local ecosystem. For information on classroom or homeschool lessons related to pollinators, contact the OSU Medina County Extension Office at 330-725-4911.

Weekday preschoolers have taken part in a Habitats module, led by MasterGardener Volunteers. The module covered topics such as water and woodlands, desserts, and farms. Upon completion of the presentation, the young learners chose an animal or insect and created a drawing of its habitat, illustrating its living environment, food sources, and breeding grounds.
