The purpose of the OFME is ensure the future of music education in Ohio, The Ohio Foundation for Music Education was formed in support of the efforts of the Ohio Music Education Association and to assist the needs of Ohio’s 2 million school children.

Ohio’s school-funding debate is also a conversation about what students get to learn.

A September 2026 report estimates that Ohio’s budget provides about $2.75 billion less over two years than full implementation of the Fair School Funding Plan would provide (Cleveland.com). Ohio’s share of the formula’s calculated base cost is projected to fall to about 32% in FY 2027—a measure of the state/local split, not the state’s share of all school spending (NBC4).

When districts face financial pressure, music and arts programs can be vulnerable to cuts in staffing, instruments, transportation, and performance opportunities. Students shouldn’t have to lose access to a well-rounded education because of funding gaps.

Arts parents, music and arts teachers, and community members: speak up. Contact your school board and state legislators, attend public meetings, and ask how your district will protect music and arts learning for every student. Share what these programs make possible in your community.

As Arts in Education Week comes to a close, we’re reminded of something we believe deeply at the Ohio Foundation for Music Education:

The arts belong in every student’s education.

Why?

Achievement — The arts help students develop focus, critical thinking, problem-solving, and perseverance.

Belonging — The arts give students a place to connect, contribute, and feel that they belong.

Creativity — The arts give students the freedom to explore, take risks, and find their own voice.

Access — Every student deserves the opportunity to learn, create, perform, and experience the arts.

Community — The arts bring students, educators, families, and communities together.

These aren’t just five reasons to support arts education. They’re five reasons we keep showing up for it.

To the educators who make the arts possible. To the students who find their voices through them. To the families, artists, advocates, and communities who believe in their value.

Every student deserves the opportunity to learn, create, perform, and find their voice through the arts.

Music, visual art, theater, dance, and other creative experiences shouldn’t be opportunities reserved for some students. They are an important part of a well-rounded education — and every student should have the chance to experience them.

The arts can help students build confidence, stay engaged, connect with others, and discover what they’re capable of.

Access matters. Opportunity matters. Every student matters.

That’s why we believe every school should make room for the arts.

Arts education should be an opportunity for every student — not a privilege for a few.

There’s something powerful about being part of an ensemble, creating alongside a classmate, performing on a stage, or simply finding a place where you feel comfortable being yourself.

The arts bring students together. They build confidence, empathy, teamwork, and connection — and they remind students that their voice matters.

Think about what happens when a student learns a new piece of music, works with an ensemble, steps onto a stage, or creates something of their own. They’re learning more than an art form. They’re learning how to listen, take risks, work through challenges, and keep going when something doesn’t come easily.

Those are skills that matter far beyond the classroom — in college, in careers, and in life.

That’s why arts education matters.

Congratulations to Wadsworth Community Band, winner of the Summer Winds at Wolf Creek Winery Music Challenge!

A heartfelt thank-you to Jan and Dave Dragus, Diane Zets, and the Riverfront Community Band for bringing this day to life. Their months of dedication and planning made this event such a success.

The Music Challenge was one highlight of a beautiful day. Together, every ensemble, donor, and volunteer helped raise more than $5,650 to advance OFME's mission through Scholarships. Advocacy. Access.

Throughout the day, we were reminded why music education matters. One participant shared something we'll remember long after the music ended: “Music has brought my daughter and me closer together.” It's moments like these that remind us why we believe music is a lifelong gift.

Well done, Wadsworth Community Band—and thank you to everyone who helped make this year's event so special.
