With hearts both heavy and light, today we say goodbye to Gus.

Gus joined our herd in 2013, and he quickly and enduringly became a one-of-a-kind therapy horse. His quiet and steady demeanor with all kinds of clients led to a common experience…when you were with Gus, you could finally take a deep breath.

And…at the age of 27 he was unavoidably feeling his age. The cold winters and hot summers got a little harder. There was off and on discussion about retirement. But Gus was unique. He just loved the work. He loved the kids. We Can Ride was unquestionably his home…a place he would never leave.

A visit to the University of Minnesota last week revealed that his current health condition was not one he could recover from. So he came home.

It’s never easy to say goodbye. But we are so honored that we got him to this beautiful perfect day, where his closest friends, both human and equine, were there to hold him physically and spiritually as he transitioned to the other side.

If you knew Gus, you knew that he was an old soul. Our guess is that he will never truly be gone. We fully expect that familiar spirit to visit us from time to time, maybe when we least expect it…or maybe when he knows we need it.

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor those who gave their lives in service to our country.

We’re also deeply grateful for the strength of community — for the families, volunteers, riders, supporters, and staff who make We Can Ride a place of connection, encouragement, and care every day.

Wishing everyone a safe, meaningful, and hope-filled holiday weekend. ❤️🤍💙

What a fabulous visit with Jenn and Michelle from . They shared with us what empowered, customized, personalized learning can do to set up students for a bright future.

We shared that while equine programs might not be for everyone, for some it is just the thing…and that connection becomes pivotal, powerful, and life-changing.

Let’s build possibility together!

(Thanks for the perfect photo bomb, Mitch!)

We had such a wonderful time sharing our work with the last evening!

After presenting at one of their meetings, we invited them out to the barn and were so pleased that they took us up on it.

They were able to watch classes, meet staff and volunteers, and interact with our very special herd of therapy horses.

We agreed that making a positive impact on our local community fills us with joy and purpose.

If your philanthropic organization, service club, or civic group would like to come out for a visit or host a speaker, email Engagement and Communications Manager Laura Schmieg at [email protected].

On Saturday, We Can Ride took tremendous joy in attending the Humane Society Walk for Animals.

This event supports medical care and adoption services for thousands of local animals.

While Mitch himself was sadly not available for adoption (there would have been a lot of takers), he represented We Can Ride proudly.

Staff and volunteers enjoyed chatting with community members and fellow horse lovers and shared our passion for our mission to serve.

It's hard to put into words the magic of the horse, and the value of connecting with each other.

A day to remember.

We loved seeing therapeutic riding featured on CBS Sunday Morning—such a beautifully done piece that really captures the heart of this work.

What stood out most is how clearly it shows the connection, growth, and quiet transformation that happens in these spaces. It’s powerful to see that story shared on a national stage.

For us, this isn’t just something we watch—it’s something we have the privilege of witnessing every single day. We see the confidence built, the breakthroughs (big and small), and the incredible bonds between riders and horses.

We’re so grateful this work is getting the recognition it deserves.
