ICYMI—Research breakthrough: Northwestern Medicine researchers discovered that a dose of time-tested, FDA-approved asthma drug Zileuton flipped peanut-allergic mice from 95% at risk for anaphylaxis to 95% protected from it. Learn about:
• How Zileuton disrupts the allergen flow from gut to blood in mice.
• The plan for testing the drug in allergic adults + timing.

Connecting the dots to an existing asthma drug “…was unbelievable,” said Northwestern Medicine’s chief of Allergy & Immunology, Dr. Stephanie Eisenbarth. “It was immediately obvious that we had a potential therapeutic approach.”

ICYMI: New data on Anaphylm was presented at . A pediatric study of Aquestive’s under-the-tongue, dissolving epi film found kids (7–17) responded similarly to adults — with comparable time to peak concentration, heart rate & blood pressure changes & only mild side effects. Exactly "...what [the FDA] expected to have happen,” notes Aquestive's CEO Daniel Barber. The FDA now has what it needs to approve Anaphylm for adults and kids (at least 66 pounds). Decision expected late Jan. Full story:

Advocacy win for children with food allergies!

The U.S. Senate has passed the Protecting Children with Food Allergies Act, a bipartisan bill that will require school food service staff to be trained to prevent and respond to allergic reactions.

AAFA is proud to have worked with Sens. Durbin and Fischer and our partners across the allergy and pediatrics community to move this bill forward.

And THANK YOU to our amazing advocates whose actions helped push this across the finish line in the Senate. Stay tuned — next stop is the House!

Canada developed an mRNA vaccine that eliminates peanut allergies — in just 4 injections 💉
Canadian researchers at McMaster University created an mRNA vaccine (same technology as COVID vaccines) that reprograms the immune system to tolerate peanuts, curing severe peanut allergies in 89% of patients after just four doses.
The breakthrough: Traditional allergy treatments slowly expose you to tiny amounts of allergen over years. This mRNA vaccine teaches your immune cells to recognize peanut proteins as harmless in just 3 months.
Clinical trial results: 120 patients with life-threatening peanut allergies received the vaccine. After 4 monthly injections:

89% could eat peanuts without reaction
7% showed reduced severity
4% saw no improvement
Zero cases of anaphylaxis during treatment

One patient who previously went into shock from peanut traces can now eat PB&J sandwiches daily. The effect appears permanent — follow-ups show immunity lasting 2+ years so far.
The same mRNA platform is being adapted for shellfish, tree nut, egg, and milk allergies. Canada expects regulatory approval by late 2026.
For parents of allergic children, this could mean freedom from constant fear. No more reading every label, carrying EpiPens, or avoiding birthday parties.

New data accepted for publication in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology highlights real-world use of epinephrine nasal spray (neffy) for anaphylaxis. In this large-scale analysis, about 9 out of 10 patients treated with epinephrine nasal spray during oral food challenges or allergy immunotherapy responded to a single dose, closely mirroring the success rates historically reported with epinephrine injections. FARE is pleased to see research that helps patients and families feel more assured about their emergency options, since confidence and access can make all the difference when every second counts.

Have you heard about the fascinating study of the asthma drug zileuton in food anaphylaxis? Eureka, it blocked molecules called leukotrienes and prevented severe reactions in peanut-allergic mice. We interview the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine lead authors for all the details on:
- How zileuton reversed mice's risk from 95% susceptible to anaphylaxis to 95% protected.
- Role of leukotrienes in 'ferrying' food allergens across the gut and into the bloodstream.
- The clinical trial in people that's enrolling, and why the authors expect it will work across food allergies.
