Come to the Grange Estate, 143 Myrtle Ave, Havertown, tomorrow evening May 7th at 6:30 pm. I will be doing a program about sea captain John Ross (1729-1800) and his importance during the American Revolution. He served as an agent of the Continental Congress to procure European military supplies during the war. His country estate, The Grange, was located 7 miles from his city home at 2nd and Pine Streets in Philadelphia. He worked with Benjamin Franklin, Robert Morris, and Silas Deane. The program is free and open to the public. A Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission marker will be placed at the Grange on August 30th. Robyn Young

For International Women's Day today, I'm sharing the following quotes from three Pennsylvania women:

"I put away my brushes; resolutely crucified my divine gift, and while it hung writhing on the cross, spent my best years and powers cooking cabbage."
- Jane Grey Swisshelm, American journalist (1815-1884), Pittsburgh, Allegheny County

"Take your stand and hold it; then let come what will, and receive the blows like a good soldier."
- Anna Howard Shaw, physician, theologian, suffragist (1847-1919), Media, Delaware County

"I am with Book as women are with child."
- Elizabeth Gray Vining, Quaker author and tutor to Emperor Akihito of Japan while he was crown prince (1902-1999), Kennett Square, Chester County (I met Ms Vining at Kendal at Longwood in 1999 while I was a student at Pendle Hill)
