Those "helicopters" hanging from maple trees are actually seeds called samaras.🍁

As they mature, they'll dry out and eventually detach from the tree. Their wing-like shape causes them to spin through the air like tiny helicopters, slowing their fall and helping carry the seeds farther from the parent tree.

Not all maple trees are the same, however. Some species, such as native red maples, are important contributors to local ecosystems, while others, like Norway maple, can spread aggressively and become invasive.

Learning to identify the trees around us helps us make informed choices about what we plant and how we care for Medford’s urban forest.🌳💚

Reminder: We’ll be at Tufts Park all day today for Part 1 of our Mini-Forest project: Site Prep Day! 🌱

Today’s work includes tilling the planting area, incorporating organic matter and biochar, adding a thick wood chip layer, and installing a temporary perimeter fence--all important steps to help build healthy soil and give future fungal networks and microbes a head start before fall planting.

Even if you didn’t sign up to volunteer, feel free to stop by, see the project in progress, and say hello!

The site is located in the back portion of Tufts Park near the Granville Parking Lot (best access is through that lot or the Wi******er Street entrance).

Sidewalk trees do so much more than beautify our streets.

Trees planted along city sidewalks help cool neighborhoods, reduce stormwater runoff, improve air quality, provide wildlife habitat, calm traffic, and make our streets more walkable and inviting. In many parts of Medford--especially areas with limited yard space--public street trees are one of the most important ways we can grow and strengthen our urban canopy. 🌳

Did you know you can request a sidewalk tree from the City of Medford? Contact Medford’s Tree Warden, Aggie Tuden.

🌳✨ Exciting news from TreesMedford!

We’re thrilled to share that we successfully provided 41 trees to Medford residents through our Spring 2026 tree program. This season also marked the launch of our new Community Tree Program, designed to expand access to trees while supporting more equitable canopy growth across the city.

Our free tree giveaway continues to focus on Medford’s heat-island neighborhoods--areas with fewer trees, less shade, smaller yards, and documented hotter temperatures. Through this effort, 31 trees were provided at zero cost to residents in priority neighborhoods.

A major new addition to this year’s Community Tree Program was the introduction of at-cost trees for residents citywide, with 10 trees purchased through the program this spring. By offering trees at wholesale pricing, along with guidance on tree selection and planting, we’re helping make it easier and more affordable for residents to plant native and climate-adapted trees that will thrive in their yards and help strengthen Medford’s canopy for years to come.

For those who missed out this spring, don’t worry--we’ll be back in Fall 2026 with more free trees for South Medford, Hillside, Wellington, and Glenwood, along with additional trees available for purchase for all Medford residents.

A huge thank you to everyone who signed up and is helping grow a greener, healthier, and cooler Medford. Your support truly makes a difference 💚🌍
