On days like today when the heat index climbs to 100°F or more, the difference between a shaded and unshaded street can be staggering. 🥵

Asphalt and concrete absorb and radiate heat, turning treeless areas, like the one pictured, into urban heat islands where it can feel 10–15°F hotter than shaded areas just blocks away. Shaded streets make a real difference in the dead heat of summer. Less heat, more shade = safer, healthier streets and lower energy bills.

This is why TreesMedford is working to plant and protect trees where they’re needed most. Let’s cool Medford, one tree at a time. 💚🌳

🌳 Imagine helping create a network of tiny forests across Medford.

TreesMedford is exploring a new 100 Tiny Forests initiative designed to bring small, densely planted native ecosystems to private yards throughout the city. By connecting these pockets of native trees, shrubs, and perennials, we can help cool urban heat islands, support wildlife, and expand Medford's green infrastructure.

Before we pursue funding and formally launch the program, we'd like to understand community interest.

Selected properties would receive a free Tiny Forest installation, including site preparation, native plants, installation, and ongoing support during the first three years as the forest becomes established. In return, participants would serve as Tiny Forest guardians by helping with watering, light weeding, and monitoring the planting.

We're currently gauging interest as we explore a potential Spring 2027 launch.

Newly planted trees need regular watering to survive and establish healthy roots--ideally once a week for their first three years. If you notice a young tree near you with a watering bag around the trunk, please consider adopting it to help keep it watered this season.
