Tufts FOCUS

Tufts FOCUS Participants will work in groups with six to eight other first-years and two upperclassmen leaders in the Medford/Somerville area.

First-Year Orientation Community Service (FOCUS) is a pre-orientation program that brings together an AMAZING group of over 250 incoming first-years and current students to do community service work in the Medford/Somerville/Boston areas! The five-day service trips into the greater Boston area allow students to explore the area surrounding Tufts and are an incredible way to launch your new career as a Jumbo.

Favorite Study Spot: 574 Boston Ave top floor.

Advice for incoming first-years: Take classes that sound exciting - not just what you think you'll study. Hardly anyone I know is majoring in what they thought they would.

Why I love FOCUS: I love FOCUS because I was able to start off my Tufts journey by meeting amazing people who wanted to give back to local communities, just like I do!

Favorite Study Spot: Lilly Music Library

Advice for incoming first-years: There's lots to do on campus, and it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by all the many activities. Don't be afraid to try new things or do what you've already loved for years! But also there's no pressure to do a million things, and over time you can stick with what you like doing best!

Favorite bathroom on campus: Campus Center 2nd floor gender-neutral bathroom!

Thanks Julian :)

Why I love FOCUS: I love FOCUS because it’s such an inclusive program. Because there are so many service options, FOCUS attracts a wide array of people from diverse backgrounds and areas of interest. I saw this paradigm represented in my amazing FOCUS leaders. Zay was a Community Health major who plays a mean saxophone and runs marathons, and Shreya was a Political Science major who is an incredible dancer and champion debater. Getting to interact with so many different people in FOCUS has introduced me to a variety of ideas and opportunities at Tufts. If I had not participated in FOCUS, I don’t think I would have as much of an awareness of the many different ways that students here have gotten involved and made Tufts their home.

Favorite Study Spot: If I want to get stuff done, the ECOM/Judiciary room in the Campus Center. If I’m not, my bed.

Advice for incoming first-years: Try everything! If you see a club or a class that you find interesting, sign up for it! Just because something doesn’t align with a plan that you might have had going into college, it doesn’t mean that you should eschew that opportunity. You also do not need to stick with a club or a class that you are not enjoying. Especially as a first-year, you have the ability to get involved in so many cool opportunities, so it’s ok to try something and not like it. If that happens, keep looking until you find something that does fit your interests. You may find an activity or a field of study that you want to pursue for the next 4 years, so once you find that, stick with it!

Favorite bathroom on campus: Dowling. The soap there smells like coconut macaroons!

Thanks Matt!

Why I love FOCUS: FOCUS is an incredible program that allows students to build meaningful connections with service sites in their area and engage with their new community before they even begin college. I've made such close friends through my two years of FOCUS, and it was amazing to have such helpful leaders by my side to make the transition so much easier! (Shoutout Charlie and Ania!)

Favorite Study Spot: Third floor of the SEC in the little conference rooms that overlook Boston!

Advice for incoming first-years: Don't be intimidated by everyone who seems to be involved in so many things! You don't always have to be busy- focus on spending time on activities/with people that make you happy and will ultimately make your college experience one to remember. Stay true to your values and spend time on personal growth. Also never use the basement Tisch bathroom.

Favorite bathroom on campus: Basement of the Psych building! Or 574. Or the SEC. Or the second floor of Olin. Lots of great options.

Thanks Alekya!!!!
