Medford Bear Creek Riparian Restoration Project - Spencer Street

Medford Bear Creek Riparian Restoration Project - Spencer Street A collaborative effort to repair Bear Creek....... However, negligence has taken its toll. The past cannot be changed, but attitudes can.

Bear Creek, in Oregon’s Rogue Valley, lies within “one of the most biologically, botanically and geologically diverse areas in the country.” It supports over 160 bird species as well as a population of wild Coho Salmon. In 2001 the Bear Creek Watershed Assessment Report highlighted the need for restoration of the watershed, due to declines in water quality and quantity, and sparse riparian habitat

, all of which are threatening its already reduced native fisheries. Rogue Valley Audubon Society and its partners have received an Innovation Grant for their efforts to save a portion of this vital habitat within city parkland in Medford. With the help of volunteers, the project team aims to restore plant diversity and the riparian forest, augmenting native vegetation and tree canopy cover along the creek to help shade the water. Over time this should help lower the water temperature—a vital step if salmon are to continue spawning in the stream. Teams will clear debris, remove invasive plants, plant native flora, and measure the creek’s health through water testing, plant monitoring, and continual weeding and maintenance. Sixty percent of all Rogue Valley residents live along the creek. By engaging volunteers and especially youth from throughout the community, the project team hopes a new generation of stewards will also be spawned to bring Bear Creek back to health.
