Th

e Washington Elementary Community 101 team is unique as it is the only K-6 school that participates in the program. Through Community101, the students run their own foundation. They are given a budget of $5,000 that they will give to the community has gratns. First they survey the student body to see what issues students were most concerned about. Next they research not-for-profits that support the issues identified. The students then send grant application forms to those agencies. The students then review grant applications and do site visits. Ultimately, the students decide how the money will be disbursed. As part of their program, the students also do a public service project. This year, the students have chosen to partner with Maslow Project and have a fun run. "Maslow Project’s mission is to offer every homeless child and youth the probability of success and the opportunity for a better life. We do this by providing resources for basic needs, removing barriers to education and employment, and fostering self-sufficiency in a collaborative and empowering environment.
