Stepping Stones, Inc.

Stepping Stones, Inc. Nonprofit organization providing free, confidential services to victims and survivors of violence. Stepping Stones staff are called advocates.

Advocates can help in a variety of ways. Stepping Stones, Inc. provides community education and the following comprehensive support services:

24/7 Crisis + Support Line – Whether callers are in crisis or looking for information, trained advocates can be reached any time, day or night by calling 1-715-748-5140 or 1-866-343-5140. In the past 4 years, we have responded to over 1,322 hotline calls fo

r information and assistance. Safety Planning – Survivors can collaborate with advocates and create an individualized plan to keep them and/or their children safe. Safety plans help survivors stay safe in a current relationship or help keep them safe after they leave an abusive situation. Statistically, leaving is the most dangerous time for a survivor. Individual Peer Counseling – Our staff offers nonjudgmental emotional support. We also help survivors create a plan to reach their self-identified goals. staff are not licensed counselors or mental health therapists. We provide financial assistance to individuals in need of mental health/substance use counseling. Support Groups –Stepping Stones provides an educational, supportive group for individuals affected by domestic violence and s*xual assault. Financial Classes – Free financial classes are offered on topics such as creating a household budget or savings plan. Community Referrals – Referrals are offered for a wide variety of programs and agencies throughout Taylor County and surrounding areas (food pantries, counseling, clothing, employment agencies, housing, and more). We help clients obtain services from:

• Law enforcement

• Social service agencies

• Legal services

• Healthcare providers

Personal Advocacy – Advocates provide assistance in obtaining housing, employment, and benefits (searching, applying, etc.) Stepping Stones can provide emergency financial assistance to pay for security deposits, first month’s rent, and/or utilities to help victims/survivors move into a new, safe home after leaving an abusive situation. We also utilize community donations to help survivors furnish their new homes; we can also provide food, clothing, gas, and other basic needs items. We provide transportation services to help survivors meet these objectives.

* An appointment must be made to determine eligibility for emergency financial assistance. Legal Advocacy – Advocates can offer general information about civil and criminal court procedures and attend court hearings with clients. This includes family law issues (custody, visitation, support, divorce) and providing support to victims during a criminal case against the perpetrator (from accompanying victims during the initial report to law enforcement to the conclusion of the case). We also assist with filing and obtaining Restraining Orders. Medical Advocacy – Victims/survivors are supported while receiving medical care related to abuse/assault. Stepping Stones coordinates with survivors, hospitals, and law enforcement to offer transportation to s*xual assault forensic exams (to obtain evidence after a s*xual assault has taken place). In 2015, Wisconsin Act 351 granted victims of certain crimes the right to be accompanied by a victim advocate. These crimes include s*xual assault, human trafficking, or child s*xual abuse. Safe at Home Address Confidentiality program – Stepping Stones advocates are certified providers of the Safe at Home program. Safe at Home is a statewide address confidentiality program that provides victims of actual or threatened domestic abuse, child abuse, s*xual abuse, stalking, and trafficking, or those who simply fear for their physical safety with a legal substitute address to be used for both public and private purposes. Enrollment in Safe at Home allows participants to use and receive mail at an assigned address in lieu of their actual address. Safe at Home then forwards mail from the assigned address to participants’ actual addresses free of charge. Awareness/Education – Stepping Stones staff work to educate survivors and community members on the dynamics of abuse and how we can offer support to those affected by violence. This includes training for professionals who work with victims/survivors of abuse, such as law enforcement/dispatch. Shelter Services – We provide immediate, temporary emergency shelter for victims in immediate danger (overnights, weekends, etc.). We also have the Emergency Housing program, which is available to current residents of Taylor County. The program provides short-term emergency housing (3+ months) for individuals and families to stay after leaving an abusive environment. Housing and basic needs are provided to survivors at no cost, which provides survivors with time to save up money and search for a new, safe home. This program is provided in partnership with a community agency, which provides the building exclusively for Stepping Stones clients. Note: Stepping Stones, Inc. no longer has a communal (shared) shelter. We now provide new, alternative shelter/housing options to keep individuals and families safe.

"Elder crime is shockingly prevalent: one in ten adults over 60 will be abused in their lifetime. It could be physical abuse, emotional abuse, s*xual abuse, or neglect. Often at the hands of family members. Every day, seniors fall prey to fraud & financial abuse. They’ve spent decades carefully saving, only to have their nest egg wiped out, sometimes in hours. It’s a low-risk crime, it’s lucrative, and it’s often unreported. Senior Deputy District Attorney Jane Walsh explains how the legal system can change to accommodate elderly victims and what YOU can do to protect your parents, grandparents, and neighbors from elder crime. Jane Walsh has worked as an attorney in Scotland, England & Wales, and Colorado. In Boulder, she established the Community Protection Division of the District Attorney's office. She prosecuted cases involving elderly victims, people with disabilities, and immigrants. Through this work, she became involved in legislative efforts to protect vulnerable victims."

"What is Elder Abuse?
Elder Abuse refers to any intentional harm, mistreatment, or neglect of an older adult. This can take many different forms, including physical, emotional, s*xual, or financial abuse. It can also include neglect or abandonment by caregivers, or even self-neglect by older adults themselves. Unfortunately, Elder Abuse is a growing problem, with studies estimating that up to 1 in 10 older adults have experienced some form of abuse.

Why does Elder Abuse happen?
There are many different factors that can contribute to Elder Abuse. These may include caregiver stress or burnout, financial exploitation, social isolation, mental health issues, or substance abuse. In some cases, older adults may be seen as easy targets for abuse due to physical or cognitive impairments, or because they are dependent on others for care.

What can we do to prevent Elder Abuse?
Preventing Elder Abuse requires a community effort, with everyone playing a role in creating a safe and supportive environment for older adults. This may include educating ourselves and others about the signs and symptoms of abuse, speaking up when we suspect that abuse may be occurring, and supporting programs and services that help older adults maintain their independence and well-being.

Closing:
In conclusion, Elder Abuse is a serious problem that affects far too many older adults. But by raising awareness about this issue, we can work together to prevent it and ensure that all older adults are able to live with dignity, respect, and safety. Thank you for watching this video, and we hope that you will join us in the fight against Elder Abuse."

"Inters*xion is a groundbreaking New Zealand documentary that explores what it means to be inters*x in a world that insists on dividing all bodies into strictly “male” or “female.” Directed by Grant Lahood and presented by inters*x activist Mani Bruce Mitchell, the film begins with a simple but profound question: What happens when a newborn baby cannot be clearly categorized as a boy or a girl?

To answer this, the documentary follows Mani across multiple countries — including New Zealand, Australia, the United States, Ireland, Germany, and South Africa — meeting inters*x individuals who share their life stories. These testimonies reveal how people born with atypical combinations of anatomical, chromosomal, or hormonal traits navigate childhood, adolescence, relationships, and adulthood under the weight of a binary gender system that was never designed to include them.

The film takes a critical look at decades of medical practice, unpacking how doctors historically approached inters*x variations as conditions to “fix.” Through personal narratives, Inters*xion exposes the physical and emotional consequences of early surgeries, secrecy, and hormone treatments carried out without informed consent — interventions often intended to make bodies conform to social expectations rather than support the individual’s well-being. These stories shed light on the harm caused by outdated medical models influenced by figures like John Money, whose theories shaped treatment protocols worldwide.

Despite the difficult themes it addresses, Inters*xion is ultimately a story of resilience. The documentary highlights the strength, humor, and humanity of inters*x people who, after years of silence or shame, reclaim their identities and challenge deeply ingrained cultural assumptions. Their experiences form a powerful call for respect, bodily autonomy, and a more inclusive understanding of s*x and gender.

By combining intimate interviews, thoughtful narration, and an accessible tone, Inters*xion serves as both an educational resource and a moving human portrait. It demystifies inters*x lives, questions the binary system, and invites viewers to rethink the way society defines “normal.”

Experts estimate that 0.05% to 1.7% of the population is inters*x. This range spans from approximately 1 in 2,000 births (for conditions involving visibly ambiguous genitalia) to 1.7% (which includes a broader range of internal chromosomal, gonadal, and hormonal variations)

Can science explain our s*xual orientation? 🧐🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🧬

"Western societies have recently opened up to homos*xuality, giving it a true place in today's world. Other more traditional cultures still refuse to accept it. But for many, it remains poorly understood, and the general opinion is that homos*xuality is a decision or a choice.

But in the 1990s, Professor Simon Le Vay made a discovery that hit the headlines. The brains of homos*xuals and heteros*xuals were showing differences."
