Today, members of the department participated in “Operation Prom” at Shawnee High School.
Operation Prom is a live crash simulation involving students and members of the fire department designed to educate the senior class ahead of their annual prom. The program highlights the very real dangers and consequences of impaired and distracted driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, every day in the United States, about 37 people die in drunk-driving crashes. Drivers between the ages of 15–20 account for a significant percentage of alcohol-related fatal crashes involving underage drivers. In addition, nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities in the U.S. involve a drunk driver.
We would like to thank the students and staff of Shawnee High School for their participation and assistance with this operation, as well as our department’s Training Officer for coordinating and putting this important event together.

As prom week continues, we want to remind all students to make smart decisions, never drive impaired, avoid distractions behind the wheel, and always practice safe driving habits. Your choices matter, and one decision can save a life.

🔥 Annual Live Burn Training 🔥

Tonight, members of the department participated in the second of three annual live burn trainings, ensuring our crews are always ready to respond when called upon.

This evening’s scenario focused on basement fires—among the most dangerous and deadly situations firefighters face. Crews trained on radio communications and fire tactics, including searching for possible victims and fire suppression operations.

Medford Township firefighters operated on the fire ground for approximately 4 hours and have since safely returned to quarters.

💡 Did you know? Basement fires can weaken a structure from below, often burning unseen and increasing the risk of sudden floor collapse for firefighters operating above.

Strong work by all members involved. Stay safe.

🚒🍀 FF Keebler & FF Plowman checking in—currently 90% Shamrock Shake, 10% poor decision-making.

Did you know? 🔥
Chicago turns the river green every year… and it was started by plumbers using dye to find leaks.

Reminder:
If you see green water = festive. 🍀
If you see black smoke = less festive, call us. 🔥

Stay safe, drink some actual water (the non-minty kind), and may your St. Patrick’s Day be quiet… but not too quiet—we’re still on shift. 👀

🚨 Incident Recap – Hinchman Rd & Stokes Rd Responses 🚒

At approximately 15:19 hours, Engine 2511, Ambulance 2583, and Captain 2503 responded to Hinchman Rd for the report of a dump truck off the roadway. Upon arrival, crews found a fully loaded tri-axle dump truck partially off the roadway with an active brush fire caused by a downed power line. Crews quickly went to work and were able to extinguish the fire before it spread.

Shortly after, at approximately 16:42 hours, crews were dispatched for a possible vehicle fire in the area of Stokes Rd. Chief 2500, Engine 2511, and Quint 2514 responded and arrived to find an unoccupied vehicle in a parking lot with fire coming from the engine compartment. Engine 2511 deployed a 1¾” handline and quickly extinguished the fire, with damage primarily limited to the engine compartment.

Great work by all crews for the quick responses and keeping both incidents from escalating. 👨‍🚒

Yesterday at approximately 0627 hours, Engine 2511 and Captain 2503 responded into Evesham Township for a reported structure fire.

Units from District 22 arrived to find a two-story single-family dwelling with smoke showing from Division A. Engine 2511 arrived and was assigned to conduct a primary search of the first floor and assist with ventilation alongside members from District 36.

The fire was located in the kitchen, and thanks to a quick and aggressive response by all companies on scene, the fire was contained to the first floor.
There were no reported injuries to firefighters. Two cats were located and treated by Fire and EMS personnel on scene.

The fire remains under investigation by the Evesham Fire Marshal’s Office. Engine 2511 was cleared and returned to town at approximately 0830 hours.

Later that afternoon, crews began preparing for the department’s annual RIT/SCBA training by designing and building an entanglement prop, which was put to use later that evening by members of the department.

Strong work by all companies involved. 🚒

🚨 Ice Water Rescue Training 🚨

Yesterday, in between calls, our members headed out to Taunton Trace Lake to complete our annual ice water rescue training. With the many ponds and lakes throughout Medford Township, it’s crucial that our members stay prepared and properly trained. When a call for service comes in, we’re ready to respond and perform a rescue safely and effectively.

❄️ Ice Safety Tips ❄️
• Assume all ice is unsafe. Ice thickness can vary and is often weaker than it appears.

• Never walk, skate, or play on frozen ponds or lakes.

• Keep children and pets away from ice-covered water at all times.

• If someone falls through the ice, call 911 immediately. Do not attempt a rescue yourself—use a long object (branch, rope, pole) from a safe distance if possible.

• Teach children to stay away from frozen water and to get help right away if they see someone in trouble.
Staying off the ice is the best way to stay safe.

Thank you for helping us keep our community safe this winter! ❄️💙

Training Through the Rain! 🌧️
The best way to shake off Thanksgiving break? Training!
This morning our crews got to work practicing saw operations and vertical ventilation—an essential skill set firefighters rely on during real fireground operations.

🔥 How Vertical Ventilation Works

• Creating openings: Firefighters use chainsaws to cut specific patterns—like louvered or strip cuts—into the roof. These cuts are intentional and strategic.
• Establishing a path: The vent is placed above the fire to let heat, smoke, and gases escape upward, drawing in cooler air to improve interior conditions.
• Improving conditions: By reducing heat and smoke inside, crews can enter more safely, locate victims faster, and attack the fire more effectively.

🛠️ Key Considerations & Techniques

• Safety first: Roof stability is checked by “sounding” it before cutting. Roof ladders provide a solid working platform, and multiple ladders can be used to safely create larger openings.
• Coordination matters: Vertical ventilation works best when synchronized with interior fire attack teams.
• Know the strategy:
Offensive ventilation: Cut directly over the fire to help interior crews.
Defensive ventilation: Cut ahead of the fire to slow horizontal spread.
• Construction awareness: Modern lightweight construction can lead to faster roof failure, so firefighters must adjust tactics accordingly.

Even on a rainy day, our crews train hard to stay sharp and ready for whatever comes next! 💪🚒
