Summer 2021: (OLD photo/NEW post) Our youth club at one camp included outdoor English lessons. As darkness fell, we used citronella candles to ward off the mosquitoes and a Coleman lantern to light the area. The photo below is from an English class a few years back, that was for all ages.

Club members packed toiletry gift bags for farm workers at other migrant camps. This was a service project our youth club participated in. Thanks to all the donors who provided socks, wash cloths, soap, bandanas, clothes pins and other goodies! Final count: SIXTY more gift bags ready for distribution.

Youth from our older group help younger children fix letters for their pen pals. After they finished, they got booklets to color in.
Thanks to all the groups and individuals who donated art supplies, snacks, and games for the clubs!

Throughout her term as First Lady, and beyond, Michelle Obama has emphasized the importance of volunteerism among our nation. One of her many initiatives occurred back in 2009 where she launched "United We Serve," an effort to increase volunteerism and its impact in America. It ran for 81 days through National Day of Service and September 11. Her initiative was an absolute success, as it brought in thousands of volunteers participating in service projects across the country!

Happy summer from Farm & Community Youth Club members! Can you balance a Frisbee on top of a pool noodle? We used the skinny pool noodles, but younger children can use the fat pool noodles. You can do this activity even in the rain.

A teen club member participates in our telephone tutoring program, English-to-go. Local volunteers help migrant youth improve their English skills through guided conversation. *We will be recruiting volunteers for this six week program again next spring.

It's August and the blueberry harvest is winding down. The majority of work crews have departed. But at one migrant camp a few children are still enjoying club activities. Last night they worked together to fill water balloons at the outdoor laundry tubs.

Children at migrant camps enjoyed listening to stories over the phone this summer. Local volunteers worked remotely, serving as telephone reading partners. Each partner had a copy of the same book. There was time for both partners to talk about the stories and pictures, too. *Hats off to our volunteers!

We have matched seventeen club members at two migrant camps with pen pals. In the top photo, children are writing to their pen pals. Older children help the younger ones.
