The Sons of the Auxiliary board dedicated to those sons of the VFW Auxiliary that were lost in combat in WW2, Korea and Vietnam, is refurbished and back up on the wall in time for Memorial Day. This is the one from the old building and it displays the 9 sons of the VFW Auxiliary who had been killed in action at the time the board was first created. Soon there will be an additional display listing all 111 Killed In Action from Taylor County, as well as an updated donor board and membership board listing all current members.
Soon, hopefully, we will have the shelving used to display our accumulated memorabilia up above the bar. This is still an ongoing process, and some may wonder what happened to the things that were displayed in the old building. It’s coming, give us grace, and understand that we can’t do everything at once, and we are often at the mercy of someone else’s time schedule when it comes to making signs, cabinetry, etc.
Some things are waiting on something else to be completed before hanging, so that measurements can be taken and displays made in an orderly fashion. Like the Sons of the Auxiliary display for example.
When it comes to donated personal memorabilia from area veterans, such as flags, uniforms, papers, pictures and other remembrances, we understand how important these things are to family members of the concerned veterans, but we cannot possibly display everything from every veteran. There are more than 3000 deceased veterans in the county and more than 1600 living veterans. We simply can’t accept or display everything. Just since opening last November, we have been offered at least a dozen 48 star flags, service uniforms, military maintenance manuals, newsletters, funeral flags, statues, two large sculptures and more.
As veterans ourselves, we appreciate the meaning of these items, and we appreciate you thinking of us to honor your loved one, but we ask for your understanding as well. How do you politely turn down a person’s emotional request to honor their loved ones? It’s not easy, and many people just can’t understand that.
There have been many priorities to take care of regarding getting the new building built, and up and running, and we continue to do our best. We are all volunteers and we all have busy lives. You will see the updates come, probably for another year at least. We ask that you are patient, come in and have bite to eat, a drink, visit with friends, enjoy a fundraiser and have some fun, and enjoy the building. Watch the changes that are still coming. We are still fundraising in order to complete our construction costs so watch for more raffles, fundraisers, and events.
Thank you again to all our donors and the support of the local community. Please visit the Memorial Day program at Flag Field on May 25th at 10 am to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of our nation, then join us at the VFW after the program to enjoy a brat or burger and music from Red Higgins and Freedom Train.
