The History of Equestrian Drill Team
PAST
The art of riding in formation is deeply meshed in the military, ceremonial and civilian histories of nations on all continents. Drill team maneuvers first began on the battlefield, where to effectively move horse soldiers around (the field), there had to be some semblance of order. The order was created through riding drills, which helped soldiers l

earn to ride more skillfully and in unison. As a result, each troop became a team better prepared for battle. Prior to the mechanization of cavalry units and the transfer of U.S. equestrian sports leadership to civilian entities, drill competition was principally a military exercise. In the 1930's, drill team competition was a popular feature of horse shows throughout America, including the National Capital Horse Show in Washington, DC and the National Horse Show held at Madison Square Garden in New York. The legendary horseman John Clarke, an officer in the 9th U.S. Cavalry, helped to train and coordinate U.S. Army drill teams that successfully competed against many of the world's best, including members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, known internationally for their famous 'Musical Ride'. PRESENT
The same type of maneuvers used by the cavalry can be used by riding clubs to create a sense of teamwork among members. Not everyone is interested in show ring competition, so a drill team offers them another avenue for participating with their horse. They can ride with a group and feel successful. Based Upon the fundamentals of Dressage (or training) and military formations, equestrian drill is a well-established tradition in many parts of the world. With a predominance of stock saddles and colorful western attire, and with the popular choice in theme music clearly skewed towards Country and Western, competitors may seem quite unrelated to the continental elegance epitomized by the famous horses and riders of the Spanish Riding School, Le Cadre Noir de Saumur or the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. To the knowledgeable horse person, however, the skills on display merely represent different branches of the same firmly rooted tree.

2026 - the year Solid Ground celebrates 10 YEARS!

The 10 year milestone did not come without many sleepless nights, tears, hard work, determination and just plain grit.

Quitting or giving up was never an option. This was a gift God gave and entrusted me to steward, grow and sustain.

To me, I see it as God planted the seed, and it took years and years of watering, nurturing and pruning to see the fruit the tree produced. Or in this case the organization.

Along the way, others joined and planted, cultivated, watered and nurtured, each bringing their own gifts, strengths, experience and wisdom.

Follow along with us as we venture into the next 10 years!

Snow is more than a winter backdrop. It is part of Earthโ€™s life support system.

Fresh snow reflects 80โ€“90% of sunlight back into space, helping cool the planet. Without it, the ground absorbs 4โ€“6 times more heat. Snow cover influences patterns of heating and cooling over the Earth's surface.

Snowpack stores water like a frozen reservoir. As it melts, it fills rivers, supports forests and wildlife, generates hydropower, and supplies drinking water across the West.

Snow also acts as an insulating blanket protecting plants and animals beneath it from extreme cold. Just one foot of snow can stabilize the temperature at ground level creating a refuge where small mammals and insects travel and forage during the winter. It protects animals in their dens and shields plant roots from damaging freeze thaw cycles.

Snow fuels winter recreation and local economies, too. From ski slopes to snowshoe trails, it draws visitors and supports jobs in mountain communities.

Snow matters.

There had to be a nameโ€ฆ

How did Solid Ground get its name 10 years ago?

I watched a very inspiring documentary called Horses Heal. At the end there is a story of a young man who was sharing how therapeutic riding and horses had changed his life. He said โ€œIt was like a dreamโ€

This resonated with me and I was certain the name needed the word dream in it. I mean, after all, it was also my dream coming true.

I wrote down hundreds of names and pages and pages of notebook paper filled with names but none really stuck. I asked friends and family, I googled names but nothing. I thought this would be the easy part, but turned out that was not the case.

I felt like God gave the word Solid Ground. I wrote it down but I never felt that was the name it was supposed to be. I didnโ€™t feel any major impact when I said it. I just kept dismissing it.

But God kept saying it over and over and over. I could not understand why.

One day I was reading in my Bible and journaling. I read the verse in Psalms 40:2 that said โ€œHe lifted me out of the mud and mire, out of the pit of despair and set my feet on Solid Ground.โ€

I instantly knew it was the perfect name.

It felt like that was the perfect picture of Solid Ground. It gave an image to me of someone getting helped out of the pit of despair, a desperate situation and placing them on solid ground and establishing their steps.

That stuck. That resonated.

I knew it was supposed to be Solid Ground. God knew all along. It took me some time to see it too.
