Poker run!
The annual poker run is this Saturday, August 8th 12-4pm, start at sandbar.

Sometime this week, Michigan Lakefront Solutions will be treating for Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) and Starry Stonewort (SS) in the locations shown on the attached map. The good news is that there are only about 10 acres of EWM bringing us to a total of just 23 acres for the year. The bad news is SS continues to spread, up to about 6 acres now. The worst infestation of SS is in the bay near the boat launch, and we are unable to treat that area until August 15 because of the late loon nest (see area marked in purple on map) . Purple loosestrife is beginning to emerge in random spots around the lake. There will be a separate treatment for purple loosestrife once the immature plants have bloomed.

ROADSIDE PICKUP DAY INFO:
Just a reminder that our next Roadside Pickup day is Saturday 18 July; I hope to see you next weekend and/or at the last pickup date for 2026 (Saturday 26 September). We will meet at Terry Bakewell’s pole barn on the northside of the intersection of 90th Avenue and Cleveland Road at 9:00 a.m.

I will assign routes, and hand out safety vests and trash bags that have been provided by the Mecosta Co. Road Commission. It is recommended that you bring gloves, wear closed-toed shoes, and if you have a gripper, that will be your friend! After picking up a tick while walking along 14 Mile Road a couple of weeks ago, I also suggest long sleeves and long pants for our summer clean up.

Surveys for invasive species on Horsehead and the John Brown Lakes were conducted on 6/5 & 6/12 by Michigan Lakefront Solutions. At this time, treatment is required for only 11.75 acres of Eurasian Water Milfoil and .25 acres of Starry Stonewort. This represents the smallest treatment area since the program was started in the early 2000's. Treatment is scheduled for June 23.

Notice to residents with property on or connecting to Colgrove Road, Becker Road, or Lynwood Lane:

There will be a discussion about repair and repaving of these roads at the Martiny Township public meeting on April 21 at 6:30 PM at the Township Hall. Several residents have contacted the township and the county to explore options and next steps. While this
meeting will focus on these roads, other residents around the lake are welcome to attend to learn about the process and constraints for road repairs.

This is not a Horsehead Lake Association initiative; the information is being shared only to make residents aware of the meeting.

The meeting will be held at 6:30 pm at the Martiny Township Hall.

A message from Jerry and Candy Devenbaugh:

Hello all HorseHead and John Brown lake residences, families and friends. 4th of July will be here before we know it & winter will seem of months long ago. While planning is well underway for this years Grand Fireworks Show to commemorate and celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of “The Declaration of Independence”, next years show has ultimately provided me with clarity & direction to “end on a High note” and retire after this year.

With aging bodies and licensing challenges, the difficulty to provide great shows are becoming unattainable. Given additional costs, supply issues and challenges obtaining insurance, and fireworks in general, it all points towards “ending on a high note” as of 2026. My son & I spoke about different options to continue the 39 year tradition but ultimately feel that it’s time to enjoy the 4th of July with a drink in hand rather than sticks of dynamite (ughhh, why do they both sound so fun😜). We’ve had an amazing run together blowing up fireworks of all sizes during the past 39 years but, we look forward to enjoying someone else’s hard work & creativity in 2027 and the years thereafter.

The Final 2026 Fireworks show will be spectacular because of you & your continued generosity. Thank you for the memories, contributions and appreciation for Horsehead Lake.

Donations will be accepted through 6-1-2026.

Counting the days until we’re back at the lake together.

2026 Goose Nest & Egg Destruction season has arrived. Horsehead Lake Association has submitted permit applications for Horsehead, Little John Brown, and Big John Brown Lakes and the permits have been issued; the authorized collection window runs April 6 – May 8, 2026 (first recommended nest check the weekend of April 11). Activity reports are due to the DNR no later than May 9, 2026.

If you plan to participate, at least one person on site must view the mandatory training video beforehand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijUyj8bOlBk&feature=youtu.be. Please follow the DNR protocol (two checks about two weeks apart, harass birds after nest destruction, do not handle pipped eggs) and fill out the data sheet for every nest you destroy; timely reporting is required for future permit eligibility. Collected eggs can be destroyed by freezing and then placing them into the household trash.

Report your results to [email protected] with general location, date, number of eggs collected for destruction, and number of nests destroyed. Our goal is to reduce nuisance levels, not eradicate geese; your participation and accurate reporting keep the program available to the lake.
