Mecosta County Youth and Family Center will be closed Nov 2nd through Nov 15th following the school recommendations- we will open back up when in person classes resume - Please everyone stay safe and we will see you soon-

We have been rather fortunate in that we have not had a ton of positive cases with our staff or students. However, that is not the underlying issue that has come to fruition. It is, as I shared early on, the lack of adults due to quarantines that is negatively impacting us. We have a large number of...

I am asking for your support to continue my family's legacy and provide our underserved youth with positive messaging, tools to take with them as contributing members of society and learning how to give back- three very important goals that have been implemented since Organizers For Youth was created. We received our 501c3 IRS non-prof designation in 1999. In 2009 our building was erected and we became known (Doing Business As: Mecosta County Youth & Family Center) to better define our location and those we serve.

And to those that may oppose the millage proposal, just think of what an impact you could make if you devoted just two hours a week at our facility raising up our youth instead of denigrating the work we do. You CAN be part of the solution. We WANT you to join us as we evolve to meet the needs of our local community. If you care as much as I do and my Mom and Dad, please step up.

An Invitation to you.
As we get closer to election day I wanted to invite the public to come to the Youth Center to get a better sense on what we provide for our youth. Having grown up here I didn't have a lot of options for after school activities until my parents put their passion into action, and built the facility. They were substantially supported with a grant from the Chapel of the Lakes Church and afforded them one Board seat on our Board. Right now that seat is vacant. Suffice to say once I began college I told my parents that I would be back to help them. And now I am. Most of our youth live in Morton Twp. and surrounding townships and cities. The Board realizes that those other cities should be asked to contribute funds towards our programs and we will likely pursue that in the coming year. We use a reputable accounting firm that checks our financial record keeping and have an audit done each year. Each month our Board members are offered our latest Profit and Loss statement and this can also be made available to the public.
The Youth Center is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 1 - 5 pm and on Wednesdays from 10 am - 2 pm. Please consider visiting the Center on Wednesday, October 21 or 28 from 10 am - 12 noon. Depending on the amount of people who decide to come and learn about what we offer, we may have to limit the amount of visitors at a time to comply with our 50% capacity. Please wear a mask. If you have specific questions or want to request any documentation from me, please call me at 231.420-2947 by Monday prior so that I can make sure I have the information for you.
We are always looking for volunteers and mentors for our youth (and me too!). Everyone has something to offer. We would welcome your time and expertise as we continue to offer after school options that are a positive influence on our youth.

Mecosta County Youth & Family Center Covid-19 Plan:

So far, data suggests that children under the age of 18 years represent about 8.5% of reported cases, with relatively few deaths compared to other age groups and usually mild disease. However, cases of critical illness have been reported. As with adults, pre-existing medical conditions have been suggested as a risk factor for severe disease and intensive care admission in children.
Further studies are underway to assess the risk of infection in children and to better understand transmission in this age group.
The role of children in transmission is not yet fully understood. To date, few outbreaks involving children or schools have been reported. However, the small number of outbreaks reported among teaching or associated staff to date suggests that spread of COVID-19 within educational settings may be limited.
As children generally have milder illness and fewer symptoms, cases may sometimes go unnoticed. Importantly, early data from studies suggest that infection rates among teenagers may be higher than in younger children.
Considering that many countries are starting to slowly lift restrictions on activities, the longer-term effects of keeping schools open on community transmission are yet to be evaluated. Some modelling studies suggest that school re-opening might have a small effect on wider transmission in the community, but this is not well understood. Further studies are underway on the role of children in transmission in and outside of educational settings. WHO is collaborating with scientists around the world to develop protocols that countries can use to study COVID-19 transmission in educational institutions.
Whether a child should go to Youth Center depends on their health condition, the current transmission of COVID-19 within their community, and the protective measures the school and community have in place to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. While current evidence suggests that the risk of severe disease for children is lower overall than for adults, special precautions can be taken to minimize the risk of infection among children, and the benefits of returning to school should also be considered.
Current evidence suggests that people with underlying conditions such as chronic respiratory illness including asthma (moderate-to-severe), obesity, diabetes or cancer, are at higher risk of developing severe disease and death than people without other health conditions. This also appears to be the case for children, but more information is still needed.
Pre- Opening Covid-19 Processes and Procedures
(in accordance with the CDC, MIOSHA and the Dept of Health # 10)
1.) Have a cleaning company come in to thoroughly clean Youth Center. Have Youth Center cleaning staff there to observe the processes and ask questions of the professional staff. Establish a cleaning schedule for each week
2.) Have the HVAC system checked and cleaned by a professional company.
3.) Re-arrange tables and chairs to insure adequate social distancing in all areas
4.) Purchase adequate amount of face masks, disposable gloves, thermometers, hand sanitizer, cleaning products (Per CDC approved cleaners) and UVC Lights. Show staff where these supplies will be kept.
5.) Purchase material and build partitions
6.) Set up meeting with Board Members to walk through the prepared facility prior to re-opening explaining what procedures are in place, and answer any of their questions.
7.) Establish an area at the Youth Center where anyone with a fever or feels ill can be isolated from the others until they are able to go home. Inform staff and volunteers of the location. Set up a tracking spreadsheet.
8.) Do not use drinking fountains. Instead, seek donated water from Ice Mountain and make sure the kids know where it will be for their use. Store additional bottled water and let staff know where it is located.
9.) Any snacks or food brought into the Youth Center should be completely sealed. The use of the UVC light over the food will inure no Virus transmission. No food will be cooked at the Youth Center.
10.) Establish a daily cleaning process and explain to all volunteers and staff on the premise for any given day.

Procedures for the Day to Day Operations at Mecosta Youth & Family Center-
1.) Enter Youth Center with mask on
2.) Get Back Pack and belongings run through the UV Light

Mecosta County Youth and Family Center
What has inspired and shaped you to be who you are? Maybe it's a loved one or a personal experience that's made a crucial impact on your life. A particular teacher that uplifted you in every possible way or even an experience you witnessed that made you change your perspective. For me, one place comes to mind that has shaped who I am today and brought genuine kindness into my heart.

Mecosta County Youth and Family Center isn't just a place that helps children of all ages. It's a family-based environment that strives to support you in everything that you do. It shows kids how to be respectable and dependant young human beings. I am sixteen and in tenth grade. I have been coming to the Youth Center since I was in second grade. Not only has it brought out my best and most unique features but, they have also helped me with everyday things. There are many skills that I have learned at the Youth Center and nowhere else. Writing a check, teamwork, drug awareness, event planning, and working with young children is just a small summary of what I have gained from this wonderful organization. Every day that the younger elementary kids were at Youth a couple of us older kids would come and help out because we wanted to be there as much as we could. We would run around with them, help them with school work, and be there for anything that they needed.

I would like to take a chance and talk about the outstanding, generous staff that keep the Youth Center standing. Mr. and Mrs. Shaw have been here since day one. Mr. Shaw takes care of the lawn maintenance, gym for the kiddos, and so much more. He has been through so many surgeries and experiences and yet he still comes to the youth center every day to make sure that the kids have somewhere to go. Mrs. Shaw takes care of everybody as if they were her children. Do you know someone that can brighten a room with her generous smile or even someone that can teach a lesson by using the most generous words that have ever been said? That is Mrs. Shaw and she is the glue that holds this place together. Mrs. K and Mrs. Bell come from Kalkaska every single day to give kids a place to come for help and they both have so much to contribute to this little organization. Without these members, the Youth Center would cease to exist and all the lives and souls they have changed would be left untouched.

What does the Youth Center mean to me? It's not just an organization that helps kids. It's a family that will always stick together because that is what family does. It brings people from all over together and gives them a place to be who they are. You can ask anyone and they would tell you exactly what I am telling you just with a different story behind it. The Mecosta County Youth and Family Center will forever stand because if not the kids may not either.
