🧄 NEW Volunteer Opportunity: Garlic Drying Party: Cure for a Cause 🧄

The drying barn is about to smell like every great Italian kitchen you've ever walked into.

Help us turn a fresh harvest into months of nourishment.

Our garlic harvest is coming in, and we need volunteers to help move thousands of pounds of organic garlic onto specially designed drying racks in our drying barn. This important step allows the garlic to cure properly, helping it store longer and maintain the flavor and quality our community kitchen and food pantry partners rely on throughout the year.

Garlic may be small, but its impact is mighty. Rich in nutrients and flavor, it helps community chefs create healthy, scratch-made meals while reducing the need for excess salt. Because it's not always readily available to food-insecure communities, we've expanded our garlic production this year to help meet growing demand from our nonprofit partners.

This is a fun, hands-on volunteer experience where you'll work alongside fellow volunteers to help prepare one of the season's most important crops for long-term storage.

Last year, volunteers helped us donate more than 297,000 pounds of organic produce to neighbors facing food insecurity. This year's garlic harvest will help continue that impact well into the months ahead.

Join us and help give our garlic harvest the perfect place to cure.

So close.

This afternoon, a beautiful summer storm rolled across the horizon, towering over the fields and putting on quite a show for everyone at the farm.

For a while, it looked like we might be in for a good soaking. Our team kept one eye on the sky and one eye on the radar as dark clouds gathered and the storm slowly made its way across the landscape.

But in the end, it slipped right past us.

No dramatic downpour. No puddles. Just a few moments of anticipation and some incredible views.

Life on a farm means paying close attention to the weather. Every cloud, every forecast, and every rainstorm has the potential to shape the season ahead. Some days the rain arrives exactly when you need it. Other days, it passes by and keeps everyone guessing.

Today was one of those days.

Even without the rain, we're grateful for the reminder of just how beautiful—and unpredictable—farm life can be. 🌦️

🌻 A walk through the flower fields.

Most of our flowers are still busy setting buds and preparing for their summer debut, but a few ambitious sunflowers just couldn't wait.

As we walked the fields this week, one bright yellow overachiever stood tall above the rest, already soaking up the sunshine and reminding us of what's to come.

Many people know Carversville Farm Foundation for the organic vegetables, pasture-raised proteins, eggs, and honey we donate to our community partners. But did you know we also grow and donate thousands of flowers each season?

Because nourishment is about more than food.

For many of the guests served by our partner community kitchens, a meal is shared at a table set with linens, real dishes, flatware, and fresh flower bouquets. It's a simple detail, but a meaningful one.

A beautiful bouquet can transform a meal into an experience. It says, "You matter." It communicates care, welcome, and dignity without saying a word.

And when the meal is finished, some guests are invited to take those bouquets with them, extending that moment of beauty beyond the table.

At Carversville, we believe everyone deserves not only nourishing food, but the dignity, respect, and human connection that should accompany it.

Sometimes, that looks like a sunflower.

Excuse us... do you have a minute to talk about turkeys?

Today, 700 broad-breasted turkey poults arrived at Carversville Farm Foundation, and it didn't take them long to start investigating their new surroundings—including our camera lens.

Just a few days old, these curious little poults will spend their first weeks in our poultry barn under the watchful care of our livestock team, where they'll grow strong, healthy, and feathered.

Once they're ready, they'll head out to pasture where they'll spend their days roaming, scratching, foraging, and exploring the way turkeys are naturally meant to do.

While broad-breasted turkeys are often raised in confinement, our regenerative farming model gives them access to fresh air, sunshine, and nutritious pasture. Their movement helps improve the land, and the diverse forage they consume contributes to healthier birds and exceptional meat quality.

Over the months ahead, these 700 poults will grow into an important source of nourishing protein that will be donated to community kitchens, shelters, and food pantries serving neighbors experiencing food insecurity across our region.

For now, though, they're focused on much more important business—like figuring out whether cameras are edible.

Welcome to the farm, little ones. 🦃

🔊 Turn up the volume.

Our apiary team recently captured something that is rarely seen—and even more rarely heard—inside a honey bee hive: a virgin queen piping.

Watch closely. When she presses her body against the honeycomb, pauses, and vibrates her wings, she's sending a message through the hive.

Known as "queen piping," this remarkable sound is part of one of nature's most fascinating communication systems. During swarm season, virgin queens use these vibrations to announce their presence, locate rivals, and signal their readiness to become the colony's next queen.

The honeycomb acts like a natural sounding board, amplifying the vibration so other bees—and in this case, our camera—can pick it up.

It's a rare glimpse into the hidden world of the hive and a reminder that there's always more happening beneath the surface than meets the eye.

🎧 Turn up the volume and see if you can hear her.

Sweet Potato SOS: Volunteers Needed Tomorrow 🚨

Our sweet potato slips have arrived, and we need all hands on deck to help get them planted.

Unlike seeds, these young plants can't wait. Once they arrive, they need to get into the ground quickly so they can establish strong roots and grow into one of our most important crops of the season.

Right now, we still have plenty of open spots and are looking for volunteers who can join us for a few hours tomorrow afternoon.

These tiny slips may not look like much today, but over the summer they'll grow into tens of thousands of pounds of sweet potatoes that will help nourish neighbors in need through our community kitchen and food pantry partners throughout the fall and winter.

From Our Fields to Their Tables: May 2026 Impact

May is one of the farm's transition months, bridging the gap between the last of our winter storage crops and the arrival of spring harvests. Even during this seasonal shift, our team, volunteers, and partners helped keep fresh food moving to the communities we serve.

Here's what was donated in May:

🥚 3,847 dozen eggs

🐔 6,390 pounds of poultry

🥩 46 pounds of beef

🥕 1,484 pounds of vegetables

Every dozen eggs, every pound of protein, and every freshly harvested vegetable represents nutritious food making its way to community kitchens and food pantries across our region.

As spring crops continue to come online and our 2026 laying hens reach full production, we're looking forward to increasing that impact in the months ahead.

Thank you to our farm team, volunteers, partners, donors, and supporters who make this work possible. Your support helps nourish neighbors facing food insecurity throughout the greater Philadelphia region.
