Date and Time:
Wed, Jun 24, 2026; 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Location: Drum Point Clubhouse, 465 Overlook Dr, Lusby, MD 20657

Calvert County, MD, has two companies planning to build large data centers in Lusby, MD. As residents of the area, we have questions and concerns about the health, safety, and environmental impacts of these data centers.

The Southern Maryland Sierra Club is hosting a town hall in Lusby, MD, on June 24, 6 pm - 8 pm, to discuss data centers and the potential impacts to our community. The event will be held at the Drum Point Clubhouse, 465 Overlook Drive, Lusby, MD. We will have a presentation by:
- Sandra Gwynn, chair of the Southern Maryland Sierra Club
- Dr. Janette Wysocki, member of the Calvert County Environmental Commission
- Chuck Borges, candidate for Maryland State Senate District 29 who has extensive experience in Federal government data usage
- Judy Pedersen, candidate Calvert County Commissioner, at-large
- Ethan Cox, candidate for Calvert County District 1 Board of County Commissioners

This will not be a static presentation. We want attendees to ask questions and discuss ways to protect our community members and our environment.

Due to space constraints, we are limiting the attendance for this event to 70 people, so please register for the event as soon as possible.

Thank you to our small, but intrepid band of volunteers who helped us work in the Native Plant Garden at Lexington Manor Passive Park (LMPP) on May 31. A big thank you also to the James A. Forrest Career & Technology Center that provided bricks to use as a barrier to protect the garden from lawn mowers! The Southern Maryland Sierra Club is creating and maintaining a native plant garden of trees, bushes, and smaller flowering plants at LMPP in Lexington Park, Saint Mary's County. If you would like to help us plant or water the garden, please contact us at [email protected].

Data Center updates:

Charles County: The Charles County Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing to consider the amended Zoning Text Amendment (ZTA) #25-187, Data Centers on Monday, June 1, 2026, at 6 p.m., in a hybrid format, both virtually and in person at the Charles County Government Building. The Southern Maryland Sierra Club submitted written testimony to the Planning Commission about our concerns with the ZTA that include issues with noise pollution, heat, air pollution from backup diesel generators, energy requirements, and water consumption. Click here for the agenda for this meeting that includes a link to ZTA #25-187:https://granicus_production_attachments.s3.amazonaws.com/charlescountymd/f6745ef76009476afc672deadda8dc950.pdf

Calvert County: The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at 10 am includes a presentation on the Calvert County Environmental Commission's data center recommendations. Because of environmental and health issues that they believe need further research, the Environmental Commission recommends the BOCC, "Pause any and all permits and actions related to any data center project until adequate data is acquired and evaluated (i.e., minimum of 12 months)." The Agenda for the BOCC meeting is here and includes a link to the Environmental Commission's proposal: https://www.calvertcountymd.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/5055?html=true

On Saturday, June 6, the NAACP Calvert Branch and Keep Calvert Country are sponsoring a Community Impact Forum on Data Centers at Mill Creek Middle School in Lusby, MD, from 3 pm - 5 pm.
