During childhood, children with special needs in our community know the benefits of inclusive and integrated schools and “challenger” sports. School is their meaningful work and source of accomplishment. But what happens when youth with disabilities age out of school and community-based programs? Unfortunately in Virginia, 80% of these youth remain at home during the day while their same-aged peer
s leave for college or work. In 2015 in Virginia, only 3 in 10 working-age people with disabilities were employed, as compared to 8 in 10 without disabilities. In addition, those with intellectual disabilities are 3 times more likely to be living under the poverty line. In Hanover County, there are few opportunities for vocational training, employment, and community engagement for youth with developmental disabilities who are preparing to transition out of high school. With your help, Raise, Inc will work to change that.
