Mended Sparrow was proud to be part of yesterday’s Operation Yellow Tape conference, focused on holistic wellness for first responders and their families as they carry what the job brings home. So much of that carries over to military members, veterans, and their families, too. 💛

Guest speakers Jason and Erica Redman, Lynn Lewis, Erin Nugent, and Eric Portwood brought valuable perspectives and powerful personal stories. We appreciated the opportunity to listen, connect, and stand alongside a community committed to supporting those who serve.

Thank you, Kenny Mitchell, for bringing everyone together, and to everyone who stopped by our booth!

🌾 WE’RE STARTING OFF STRONG! 🐴

We launched our Bale Us Out With Hay campaign on Saturday, and just two days later, 33 of our 80 round bales have already been sponsored!

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has stepped up to support our herd. Many of you have spent time with our horses, participated in our programs, or simply believe in the mission of Mended Sparrow.

Your generosity helps feed the horses that make our no-cost, nonclinical, trauma-informed equine-assisted services possible for service members, veterans, first responders, and their immediate families.

💚 33 bales sponsored. 47 to go!

Can you help us reach our goal?

🌾 One bale: $75
🌾 Two bales: $150
🌾 Five bales: $375

BALE US OUT WITH HAY!

Our horses are an essential part of everything we do at Mended Sparrow. Without our herd, the nonclinical, trauma-informed experiential learning opportunities we provide simply wouldn't be possible.

Together, we've provided well over 400 services to service members, veterans, first responders, and their immediate families through our no-cost, nonclinical, trauma-informed equine-assisted programs.

With hay prices having increased yet again, we're launching our “Bale Us Out With Hay” campaign to help cover the cost of feeding our herd.

Our goal is simple: 80 people contributing $75 each to purchase 80 round bales of hay.

🐴 1 round bale = $75
🐴 2 round bales = $150
🐴 5 round bales = $375

Our goal is $6,000, and every bale gets us closer!
Every bale you sponsor helps feed the herd that makes Mended Sparrow's no-cost programs possible for service members, veterans, first responders, and their immediate families.

Can you sponsor one bale?

This past Friday, we had the privilege of welcoming the Richmond Ambulance Authority (RAA) Peer Support/CISM team to Mended Sparrow for a full-day Off-Shift Reset Retreat.

The day was designed to give their team space to step away from the demands of the job, experience something different together, and engage in our non-clinical, trauma-informed, experiential approach.

One participant later shared this Google Review:

“My peers and I came in today with no idea what to expect, and we walked out with so much more awareness about ourselves and each other. Shahnaz and Pat were our facilitators, and they were so accommodating, adaptive, patient, and encouraging. It was an amazing experience, and we all hope to be back soon.”
— Moy

We are grateful for the opportunity to spend the day with this team and for the trust they placed in us to be part of their off-shift experience.

For agencies, departments, peer-support teams, and first responder organizations interested in bringing their team out for an Off-Shift Reset Retreat, we would be happy to start a conversation.

Apparently, Orion has officially earned the nickname Houdini. 😂

Not once, but twice, this little genius managed to get himself off the Blocker Tie Ring setup.

His mother already knows how to turn the key and start the mule, and apparently Orion decided escaping from horse hardware would be his contribution to the family skill set.

The first time, I thought maybe it was an accident.
The second time?
Nope. Orion figured something out. 😂
And then, of course, he just stood there grazing like he had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Apparently we’re not raising horses anymore. We’re running a very small equine criminal enterprise. 😂

Thank you to everyone who came out Friday for Mended Sparrow’s 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance. As our nation marked the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we gathered to remember the lives lost, honor those who responded, and recognize the service members, veterans, first responders, and their families whose lives were forever changed by that day and everything that followed.

The highlight of the day was the Wall of Gratitude. Each handwritten note offered appreciation, remembrance, or words of encouragement. Friday was only the beginning. These messages will remain in place, and the Wall of Gratitude will be a permanent fixture at Mended Sparrow—continuing to grow as people stop by and add their own messages.

Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to clean out the hay barn, spread gravel, refresh obstacles, and paint the barn stalls to stop the rust, while others stopped by to write notes for the wall. Every project helped care for the space where Mended Sparrow provides programs for service members, veterans, first responders, and their immediate families.

Together, the work completed around the farm and the messages placed on the wall honored September 11 through service while creating something that will continue to support and encourage the people who come through Mended Sparrow. To everyone who worked, stopped by, or added a note—thank you for being part of it.

🇺🇸 Friendly Reminder 📣

Our 9/11 Day of Service & Remembrance volunteer event is tomorrow, beginning at 8:00 AM.

From 8:00–10:00 AM, volunteers help clean out the hay barn and spread gravel.

From 10:00 AM–12:00 PM, volunteers assist with painting the stalls to help stop the rust.

A special highlight of the morning will be creating our Wall of Gratitude. Volunteers will write messages of appreciation and encouragement for service members, veterans, first responders, and their families. The messages will be laminated and displayed along the barn aisleway as a year-round reminder of community support.

If you’re planning to volunteer, please complete the waiver here:

What a great turnout for our Volunteer Orientation this past Sunday!

We had a strong group come out to learn more about Mended Sparrow, our programs, and the many ways volunteers can get involved.

Volunteer time creates capacity, and that capacity creates impact. The time, skills, and support volunteers contribute expand what an organization is able to accomplish. At Mended Sparrow, that collective effort allows us to strengthen our programs, events, and day-to-day operations while creating an even greater impact for the service members, veterans, first responders, and families we serve. We are grateful for the volunteers who already give their time to Mended Sparrow and for those who are stepping forward to join us.

We wrapped up the orientation with a mini team-building activity that gave everyone a chance to work together, problem-solve, and experience a little of the connection and collaboration that are part of what we do at Mended Sparrow.

To everyone who joined us Sunday, thank you for spending part of your evening with us and for taking the time to learn more about becoming part of our volunteer team.

Our next Volunteer Orientation will be held on September 27th at 5:00 p.m.

Interested in getting involved? Come learn more about Mended Sparrow and the many ways you can be part of our volunteer team. [email protected]

Yesterday was such a wonderful day at Mended Sparrow! We welcomed a group of women veterans from the VA hospital who are visually impaired for an afternoon centered on creativity, sensory engagement, and connection.

Each lady created her own no-sew leather purse, exploring the different textures and feel of the leather as she worked through each step. Everyone left with a beautiful purse that she made herself.

The day also included a little horse education and time with the herd, with Miss Darby gracing us with her presence.

A special shout-out and thank-you to our volunteers, Suzanne and Keri, who joined us in supporting the ladies throughout this experience. 💛
