World Food Day — Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Today, on World Food Day, we’re reminded that something as simple as a can of food can make a real difference for a neighbor in need.

This year is especially meaningful for Messiah as we celebrate 50 years of MCEF - Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions serving our community — and our congregation is taking part with a special goal:

- 500 cans of food
- $500 in donations

By October 20

For 50 years, MCEF has helped local families with food and other essential needs, and Messiah is proud to have been part of that story from the beginning.

If you’d like to help us reach our goal, bring canned goods to the special collection bin at church. Every can adds up, and every gift helps care for a neighbor.

KINDNESS IN ACTION

A new food pantry at Salem Church Elementary is helping local students and their families receive food, toiletries and other essentials—right at school and without embarrassment.

Even more encouraging, Chesterfield’s network has grown from just four school pantries to 26 in two years.

What a wonderful example of a community recognizing a need and working together to meet it with kindness and dignity.

Salem Church Elementary School celebrated the opening of a new in-school food pantry Tuesday, the latest addition to a growing network of community care spaces across Chesterfield County.

A thought to carry with you from Sunday’s sermon:

“God knows us, warts and all, and God invites us anyway.”

We don’t come to God’s table because we have everything figured out. We come carrying our worries, our shortcomings, our messiness, and all the ways we fall short.

And still, God prepares the feast.
Still, God opens the table.
Still, God invites.

Pastor Ryan reminded us that grace can be difficult to understand—but we don’t have to fully understand it to receive it. We can come to the table, rejoice, give thanks, and then carry that grace back out into the world.

“On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast…” — Isaiah 25:6

May the grace we receive leave a few “crumbs of grace and stains of mercy” wherever we go this week.

Manna Sunday is October 18!

A little generosity can make a big difference!

This Sunday, help Messiah Lutheran Church support our neighbors through MCEF - Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions by bringing donations of nonperishable food and everyday essentials.

Crunchy peanut butter is especially needed! We're also collecting items for MCEF's Thanksgiving Bags to help local families enjoy a special holiday meal.

Every donation, large or small, is an act of kindness that reminds our neighbors they are not alone.

Thank you for helping Messiah live out our mission — Small church. Big Heart.
