💜🐾 WHY DOES THE CHAMPAIGN COUNTY BOARD OF DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES LEVY MATTER? LET’S TALK ABOUT WILLIE! 🏡🔑

If you want to know what determination, hard work, and the right support can accomplish, just take a look at Willie!

🌟 WHAT A YEAR IT HAS BEEN FOR THIS GUY! 🌟

Willie had two big dreams. He wanted to have a job where he could earn his own money, and he wanted something many of us take for granted — an apartment to call HIS OWN!

Well, guess what happened?!

🎉 WILLIE DID BOTH!!! 🎉

That’s right! Willie is now working, cleaning apartments at Legacy Place, AND he recently moved into his very own apartment! 🏡💼

Talk about making dreams come true!

But here’s what we want our community to understand.

💜 THIS IS HOW DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES SERVICES WORK!

Willie had the dreams, and Willie was willing to put in the work. With the help of his SSA through the Champaign County Board of Developmental Disabilities, he was able to connect with services, opportunities, and the support needed to work toward those goals.

Through CCAWL’s Vocational Habilitation program, Willie has been able to build job skills, learn responsibility, earn money, and experience the pride of having a job.

And with the right support and planning, Willie accomplished another major milestone — MOVING INTO HIS OWN APARTMENT! 🔑

Think about that for a minute.

❤️ Having a job to be proud of.

❤️ Earning your own paycheck.

❤️ Unlocking the door to a place that’s YOURS.

❤️ Making your own choices and building your own future.

That’s independence. That’s opportunity. That’s Willie living the life HE dreamed of!

And let’s make one thing very clear — nobody handed Willie his accomplishments. HE WORKED FOR THEM! 💪 His SSA and support team helped open doors, but Willie is the one who walked through them!

Because when you hear about services provided through the Champaign County Board of Developmental Disabilities, we want you to picture people like Willie.

💙 WHAT DOES THE LEVY MEAN TO JOEY? IT MEANS PURPOSE. 💙

Ask Joey about his job at CCAWL and he’ll tell you something that says it all:

“I finally found my purpose.” 🐾❤️

And if you know Joey, you know just how much those words mean.

Joey didn’t simply wake up one morning and magically find the place where he belonged. He had people and services helping him explore his options along the way.

With support from the Champaign County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Joey’s SSA helped arrange a visit to CCAWL so he could see it for himself and decide: Is this somewhere I want to be? Is this something I want to do?

The answer turned into so much more than a simple yes.

CCAWL became a place where Joey could work, learn, contribute, build confidence, make friends, and feel needed. It became a place where he discovered something every person deserves the opportunity to find:

✨ A sense of purpose. ✨

But Joey’s story doesn’t end when the workday is over.

Joey also has home staff he loves who support him as he works toward and enjoys living his own life as independently as possible. They are there to help with the things he needs while still allowing Joey to make choices, have responsibilities, and live a life that belongs to him.

That is what services can look like.

They can look like a job you’re proud to go to.
They can look like people who believe in you.
They can look like learning to live more independently.
They can look like friendships, responsibility, confidence, and community.

And sometimes, they look like a man smiling at work and telling everyone:

“I finally found my purpose.” 💙

When our community considers the developmental disabilities levy, stories like Joey’s show what these services mean in everyday life and what they help make possible for people and families throughout Champaign County.

💜 WHY VOTE YES? JUST ASK MORGAN! 💜

If there is one thing we can tell you about Morgan, it’s this: she knows how to make the most out of every minute! 🥰😂

Morgan is now able to use her waiver to attend CCAWL Adult Day Services, and she doesn’t just show up—she comes ready to LIVE IT UP! Whether she’s spending time with friends, participating in activities, getting out into the community, working on new skills, or just making everyone around her smile, Morgan makes sure her days are FULL. 💜

But that is what these services are supposed to be about.

They’re about giving people like Morgan the opportunity to choose how they spend their day, build friendships, become more independent, try new things, and be part of their community.

Morgan also receives support from a home provider, helping her continue building independence and living the life that SHE chooses outside of Day Services, too. 🏡💕

That is what waiver services can do.

They don’t simply provide “services.”

They provide opportunities.
They provide choices.
They provide independence.
They provide friendships.
They provide a LIFE that belongs to the person receiving the support. 💜

And Morgan? She is going to make sure she enjoys every single minute of hers! 😂💜

💜 WHY THE LEVY MATTERS — MEET GABE 💜

If you’ve been following our stories, you’ve seen just how much developmental disability services can mean in someone’s everyday life. Today, we want you to meet Gabe and show you what those opportunities can look like for him. 💜

Gabe recently joined CCAWL, and let’s just say… country life is looking pretty good on him! 😂🌾

From feeding the cows 🐄 to feeding the chickens 🐓, working, learning new things, and simply hanging out with his new friends, Gabe has been exploring a whole new side of life.

But when we talk about why these services matter to Gabe, it really comes down to something very simple:

Gabe gets the opportunity to live HIS OWN life.

He gets to go out into his community.
He gets to work.
He gets to make friends.
He gets to try new things.
He gets to discover what HE enjoys.
And he gets the support he needs along the way to continue becoming more independent.

That’s what services can do.

It isn’t just about a program or a place someone goes during the day. It’s about giving people like Gabe opportunities to have a life filled with purpose, friendships, experiences, choices, work, independence, and belonging.

And sometimes that independence looks pretty serious…

Other times it looks like feeding chickens, hanging out with cows, making new friends, and discovering that you might actually be a country boy after all. 😂🐄🐓🌾

💙 MEET KRISSY — THIS IS WHAT SUPPORT CAN LOOK LIKE 💙

When you look at this picture of Krissy standing proudly beside the levy sign, you’re looking at someone who continues to work toward something incredibly important: living a more independent life.

One important part of Krissy’s life is her HPC (Homemaker/Personal Care) services.

HPC isn’t about doing everything for Krissy. It’s about providing the support she needs so she can learn to do more for herself. ❤️

Through HPC services, Krissy can work on everyday skills and responsibilities that many of us take for granted—keeping her home clean, completing household tasks, following routines, making choices, getting out into the community, and continuing to build confidence in herself.

And Krissy will definitely let you know when she wants to do something HER way! 😂 That independence and personality are exactly what we love to see.

These services also give Krissy opportunities to be involved in her community, maintain relationships, and continue learning skills that help her live the life she chooses.

We have watched her take pride in her work, become more confident, and continue growing into a woman who knows she is capable of accomplishing things.

That is why services like HPC matter.

They can mean the difference between simply having somewhere to live and having the support to create a home, a routine, relationships, responsibilities, and a life of your own.

As our community considers the Champaign County Board of Developmental Disabilities levy, we encourage everyone to learn about the levy and the services available to people with developmental disabilities.

💙 WHAT DOES THE LEVY MEAN TO ALLISON? 💙

Sometimes the biggest changes don’t happen all at once.

Sometimes they happen quietly.

A little more confidence.
A little more independence.
Speaking up a little louder.
Trying something new.
Making a friend.
Volunteering to help.
Walking through the door knowing, “I belong here.”

That’s what we’ve had the privilege of watching happen with Allison. 💙

Through services and funding supported by the Champaign County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Allison is able to attend CCAWL Adult Day Services and Vocational Habilitation.

And over the past year, we have watched this young lady absolutely BLOSSOM. 🌸

When Allison first started, she was quiet and shy. She sometimes needed a little extra encouragement to step outside of her comfort zone.

But give someone opportunities, surround them with people who believe in them, and then watch what can happen.

Allison started coming out of her shell.

We’ve watched her become more comfortable around others. We’ve watched her advocate for herself. We’ve watched her try new activities, volunteer in her community, learn new skills, laugh with her friends, and become more confident in who she is.

And we’re still watching her grow.

That’s why services for people with developmental disabilities matter.

It’s not simply about having somewhere to go during the day.

It’s about having somewhere to GROW.

It’s having a place where you’re encouraged to make choices.

A place where your abilities are noticed.

A place where mistakes can become learning experiences.

A place where friendships can develop.

A place where someone looks at you and sees possibility instead of limitations.

For Allison, having access to these services has helped give her opportunities to become more independent and more involved in her community.

But perhaps one of the most beautiful things has been watching Allison begin to realize something that the people around her already knew:

She is capable. She has a voice. She has something to contribute. And she deserves every opportunity to build the life SHE wants. 💙

When you look at this picture, you might see Allison standing beside a levy sign.

We see so much more.

We see the young woman who has grown tremendously over the past year.

We see confidence that wasn’t always there.

We see independence growing.

We see friendships, laughter, hard work and accomplishments.

We see a young woman coming into her own.

And we’re incredibly excited to see where she goes next. 💙

This is what support can look like.

This is what opportunity can look like.

And most importantly…

This is what believing in someone can look like. 💙

💙 WHAT DOES THE LEVY MEAN TO STEVEN? 💙

When people hear the word levy, they may think about taxes, numbers, or something written on a ballot.

When I hear the word levy, I think about Steven.

I think about the life he has built. His job. His independence. His friendships. His confidence. His sports. His community. And all the people who have helped him become the young man he is today.

Steven receives HPC services, which help him live his life with greater independence while still having the support he needs. His favorite independent provider happens to be Edie 😉, and he also enjoys spending time with his other providers at CCAWL.

But these services aren’t just about having someone there.

They’re about helping Steven make choices, learn new skills, get out into his community, try new things, and live a life that belongs to HIM.

Steven has also benefited from employment services through Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD). Having a job means so much more than receiving a paycheck. It means responsibility. Pride. Purpose. Being part of a team. Knowing that you have something valuable to contribute.

And sometimes the people you meet through services become so much more than someone doing a job.

Steven found one of his best friends in his former SSA, Joe. ❤️

That relationship didn’t simply disappear when Joe was no longer his SSA. Joe became a friend, a mentor, and someone who believed Steven could do more. Through that friendship, Steven even learned a new sport.

That’s the part of developmental disability services that can’t always be explained on a spreadsheet.

You can’t put a dollar amount on someone gaining confidence.

You can’t put a number beside a friendship that changes someone’s life.

You can’t measure the feeling a person gets when they learn something they never thought they could do.

And you can’t fully calculate what independence means to a person and their family.

The Champaign County Board of Developmental Disabilities has been part of helping Steven access the supports and opportunities that allow him to work, participate in his community, build relationships, and continue becoming more independent.

Without that system of support, Steven’s life could look very different.

So when our family talks about this levy, we’re not talking about something abstract.

We’re talking about Steven’s life.

We’re talking about services.
We’re talking about providers.
We’re talking about employment.
We’re talking about friendships.
We’re talking about opportunities.
We’re talking about independence.

Most importantly, we’re talking about a young man who deserves the same thing every one of us wants:

A meaningful life. A job he’s proud of. Friends who believe in him. Choices of his own. And a community where he belongs. 💙

For our family, that’s what these services mean.

That’s what the Champaign County Board of DD has helped make possible for Steven.

And when you see Steven standing beside that levy sign giving his thumbs-up 👍, I hope you don’t just see a sign.

I hope you see the person whose life is behind it. 💙

Can we just talk about the PURE JOY on Morgan’s face?! 😂❤️

Sometimes life isn’t about the big things. Sometimes it’s a cold drink, a little outing, good company, and a moment that makes you smile THIS BIG! 🥰

At CCAWL, we love seeing our individuals out in the community, making choices, having fun, building independence and—most importantly—ENJOYING LIFE!
