Summer is the season of sunshine and adventure! ⛱️

Whether your child goes on vacation, camp, or explores around your community, we want them to be safe.

Follow our summer safety tips to have a safe and sunny summer:

1. Children are never drown-proof! Keep children in your sight at all times, never leaving any child alone near water, not even for a few seconds.

2. Use sunscreen! Select an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or higher to prevent sunburn and tanning, both of which are signs of skin damage.

3. Keep yourself and your children hydrated by establishing mandatory water breaks throughout play!

If your children are visiting grandparents or senior loved ones this summer, encourage them to set up a safe play area in their home for your younger children by removing small objects and keeping them out of reach and sight.

Simple acts such as moving cords and strings out of reach and ensuring windows are locked can create a fun, safe environment for your child’s visit!

Today, 's Big Boy 4014 steam engine will start it's journey through Pennsylvania, south through Scranton and Reading (and many other towns) to get to Philadelphia for the July 4th celebration! After that, it will go west through Reading, Harrisburg, Altoona, and Pittsburgh (and many other towns) before finally leaving PA one month from now, on July 12th, to continue it's journey west.

Safe Kids PA is excited to share our newest webpage to mark this historic occasion, focusing on railroad safety! On this page, you'll find safety tips to keep in mind when you're near railroad tracks, either as a pedestrian or as a driver.

Before you strap in for road trips or vacations this summer, make sure your child’s car seat is installed correctly and that you’re being safe on the road! 🛣️

Remember, you are your child’s living guide to safety, so always use your seat belt while driving in the car, whether you are the driver or passenger. 🚗

Happy Summer! ☀️

Earlier today, the world's largest operating steam engine, Big Boy No. 4014, crossed into PA briefly before moving into New York. It will return to PA this Friday and make its way to Philadelphia for the United States' 250th birthday!

If you're planning on seeing Big Boy 4014 over the next few weeks, make sure you also plan to keep yourself and your family safe!

🛑 Remember, trains can’t stop quickly to avoid people or vehicles on the tracks.

🚅 The average train overhangs the track by at least three feet – take extra precaution and stand back at least 25 feet from all railroad tracks. (Also keep all technology -like cars or drones -at least 25 feet away too!)

🛤️ Never assume tracks are abandoned or inactive – ALWAYS expect a train and assume tracks are being actively used.

Union Pacific connects 23 western U.S. states, providing safe and efficient railroad transportation, freight shipping and logistics.

Are you hiring a babysitter for the summer season? ☀️

SKPA has tips for you!

Always go over your fire evacuation plan with your trusted caregiver, ensuring you point out fire escape routes and potential problem areas. 📍

Instruct your sitter to leave the house with your children and pets right away in case of fire and to call the fire department from a neighbor's phone. 📞

Paul Miller’s Law is officially moving Pennsylvania into hands-free driving, which means the days of holding your phone at a red light and pretending you’re “not really driving” are over. The law makes it illegal for drivers to use a hand-held phone or interactive device while behind the wheel, even if they’re stopped in traffic or sitting at a light. For the first year, police issued warnings, but starting June 5, 2026, violations can bring a $50 fine plus court costs and fees. Drivers can still use hands-free calling, GPS, music, and emergency calls, but the basic message is simple: mount it, voice-command it, or leave it alone. Pennsylvania roads are chaotic enough without everyone treating I-83, Route 30, or the Turnpike like a rolling group chat.
