Next up in our fellowship spotlight 🔦: University of Pennsylvania - Philadelphia, PA!

*Number of fellows per year: 6-8

*Favorite thing about your program: Rotating at different hospitals across Philadelphia gives us exposure to diverse clinical settings, patient populations, and truly awesome faculty.

*Describe your ideal co-fellow to have: Someone who will see a consult for you when you are swamped, and then go to happy hour with you after work

*Advice for incoming applicants: Use your interview to really get to know the program, and trust your gut when it’s time to decide - its GI after all 😊

*Anything else you’d like to add about your program: The advantage of training at an institution like Penn is its people - the depth of expertise in each subspecialty within GI lets you truly tailor your experience to the questions and clinical experience you find most rewarding.

What an amazing group! Hope to see you at our annual meeting close by in Philly in just a few weeks 💩📖

August is Gastroparesis Awareness Month! For many, gastroparesis can be a tough diagnosis for physicians to explain and patients to understand. However, one simple way is to think of it as a traffic jam in the stomach. Food gets “stuck,” just like cars at a red light, leading to symptoms that can feel unpredictable day to day. Using clear analogies like this helps patients and families better understand a complex condition.

See the full post for the complete analogy and tips and tricks for patients to manage this diagnosis!

Next up in our fellowship spotlight series: Geisinger Central in Danville, PA! The host of our recent PSG capsule course, a wonderful group. Read more to hear about this program:

number of fellows per year- We recently upgraded to taking 4 fellows every year! Woohoo

favorite thing about your program - We love the camaraderie and fun relationship we have between all our fellows and our faculty. Everyone helps each other out and you always feel supported throughout the way. We get comprehensive training in IBD, motility disorders, genetic disorders, and advanced endoscopies. A great plus about our program is being on procedures from day one so we can start developing skills and grow. We all appreciate how supportive the faculty is and they’re always providing amazing feedback during procedures, consult services, and clinic. We get a lot of extra hands-on opportunities with Olympus and Boston scientific to practice using all the gadgets!

ideal co-fellow to have - Just like everyone we have! 🙂 Someone who is supportive to their peers, eager to learn and grow, is a team-player, and most importantly someone who is fun to work with!

advice for incoming applicants - It can be a stressful process to go through but don’t forget to be yourself! Let your joy for GI shine through by sharing your experiences in residency and your desires for your future in the field. Make sure to have a mentor to share things with and get advice from them along the way. When going to the upcoming conferences, don’t be afraid to say hello and meet new people! You will be surprised how supportive and understanding everyone can be.

anything else you’d like to add about your program - we are the best 🙂😉

Up next in our fellowship feature series: St. Luke’s University Hospital GI Fellowship in Bethlehem, PA!

# of fellows per year: 4 fellows

Favorite thing about your program: The camaraderie between the fellows and attendings! Our attendings create a safe space for learning. From day one they believe in you whether it is patiently navigating through your first scope or busy days on inpatient service. No question is ever too big or too small; they will work with you to make the most of your fellowship experience.

Ideal co-fellow to have: Someone who is a team player, hardworking, open to learning, and honestly just good vibes!

Advice for incoming applicants: GI being a competitive fellowship can feel daunting but it shouldn’t deter you from a career in this amazing field. See what aspect of GI interests you and try to find a mentor during your residency who can help guide you. Know your research well and be a proud internist! A strong base in IM will help you become a better specialist. Lastly reach out to alumni or friends in GI who can help you navigate through this journey.

Anything else you’d like to add about your program: It’s a great program where you will see a wide variety of pathologies with different patient populations. Our schedule is also great because we rotate 2 weeks inpatient followed by 2 weeks outpatient which prevents burn out and also gives you ample scoping oppertunity.

We love getting to know all the fellows in our state’s fellowship programs, and St Luke’s sounds like a special one! Stay tuned for more features leading into interview season.

Next up in our fellowship spotlight, Temple Hospital in Philadelphia, PA ❤️
•How many fellows per year? 4 fellows per year
•Favorite thing about the program? How approachable the attendings are - willing to offer help and feel supported when I work with them
•How would you describe the ideal cofellow? Good team player, enjoys food truck food or cafeteria soup, and can laugh or vent together the same day with
•Advice for current GI applicants: Be your true self during interview day and you will find a program that is a good fit for you (and the program as well). Be proud of how far you’ve come because you’ve made it such a long way!
Anything else we should know about your program? Front loaded schedule first year. Second and third year can do a variety of rotations like endoscopy, motility, nutrition, research, GI onc, outpatient hepatology, etc.

Next in our fellowship spotlight series is:
Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania 👏🏼 See what their recently graduated fellow (and now Guthrie GI attending!!) had to say about her wonderful program:

1. Number of fellows per year: We currently have 2 fellows per year, for a total of 6 fellows in the entire program
2. favorite thing about your program: What we love most about our program is the mentorship and hands-on experience you get from day one. Our attendings are incredibly supportive and invested in our growth- both professionally and personally.
We get both academic and community-based training. For transplant hepatology exposure, we rotate at Penn State Hershey, and for a more community-focused experience, we spend time at Guthrie Corning Hospital. We’re also actively involved in interpreting studies like Bravo pH monitoring, esophageal manometry, and capsule endoscopy.
One of the biggest perks? No advanced fellows, which means we get hands-on experience early with high-level procedures like ERCP and EUS.
3. Ideal co-fellow to have: Someone who is down-to-earth, collaborative, reliable, and always willing to lend a hand. Our strong team dynamic has made all the difference in the fellowship.
One of the most meaningful parts of our program is how much we support each other outside of fellowship. We understand that life doesn’t pause- many of us have gone through big milestones like moves, marriages, and growing families during training. There’s a genuine sense of community here, and we’ve truly been there for one another every step of the way.

4. Advice for incoming applicants: Be authentic in your interviews! We value passion, strong work ethics, and a genuine desire to serve our patients- not just a perfect resume.

5. anything else we should know about your program?: If you are looking for a program where you will be given autonomy, support, and treated like family- with plenty of access to endoscopic training and great pathology- Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital gastroenterology fellowship program may be a perfect fit for you!

Sounds like a gem of a program— good luck to all the applicants!
