According to the National Center on Family Homelessness, the most common reasons for families to experience homelessness are lack of affordable housing and poverty. In Pennsylvania, the average wage required for a two-bedroom rental is $19.95/hr and the average wage for Pennsylvania renters falls short of that at $16.43/hr (Out of Reach, 2021). On a national level, data from the Annie E. Casey Foundation states that in 2019, 14% of all U.S. families and 29% of single parent families were living below the poverty line (Families with related children, n.d.). The combination of high housing costs and low income, increases the risk of a family becoming homeless.

For more information on poverty within families and housing in Pennsylvania, please follow the links to the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the National Low Income Housing Coalition.
